<p align="justify">This is easy: The Cars. D2 is a facsimile of Japan. They brought nothing new to the table in terms of music style AND look. I can name other New Romantic artists who were doing the same thing years before D2. I can't name that many bands and artists that sounded like The Cars before The Cars debuted (maybe lookswise, someone can come up with a band or two). This coming from a fan who likes more D2 songs than Cars songs.

Oh, this debate is SO easy for me.
Duran Duran are the reason I'm here on this website in the first place. They're the reason I'm into anything contemporary. They're the reason for my being a real music fan, period.
The Cars are just this group with a couple of songs I dig. I'm not even a fan of theirs. I just like some of their songs, own one of their albums, and that's that. Fat lady sings.
The whole "Duran sounds like Japan" thing is a red herring. Japan and Duran both had the same influences, so it would make sense for them to have a similar sound. And for your information, Duran's post-punk debut album was similar to the type of music they were playing on the demos they recorded with Andy Wickett as the lead vocalist -- back in [b]1979[/b]. Let me see, what were Japan doing in 1979? Oh, that's right, [i]Obscure Alternatives[/i], where they carried over that rough glam rock sound from [i]Adolescent Sex[/i] into their last pre-New Romantic album.
(I *big heart* Japan too, mind. I mean none of the above as a slam on them. It's just -- I'm tired of this whole "Duran is a Japan soundalike" b.s. I keep on hearing everywhere.)
If the reason a lot of you chose The Cars is probably because The Cars made you feel less insecure about your looks, that's totally ridiculous. I mean, look at New Musik. Tony Mansfield was never going to be a pin-up king, but New Musik's music was so AWESOME. You cannot deny the power of that kind of music. And Duran's output is in that same sort of '80s Britrock realm. The Cars, truth be told, kinda bore me after awhile. I think of them as being more classic rock than anything else, because I've heard them on classic rock radio. OH WAIT. Maybe that's the reason why so many of you are pro-Cars and anti-Duran? Because you guys are stodgy enough to where classic rock radio actually sounds GOOD to you?
Oh, and I thank my lucky stars MTV came around when it did, or else the '80s would've been ruled by the same boring crap that ruled the American musical landscape throughout the '70s. Music videos meant you had to care more, instead of being lazy. Also remember that American radio was very closed-minded. Most of the artists who made it because of MTV had no other choice. Duran Duran included; the only American DJ who was spinning Duran records before MTV came along was the wonderful Rodney Bingenheimer. Everyone else was too busy propagating the same boring American AOR crapola they'd played since the mid '70s, at least. MTV came along several months after Duran's debut album was released and after Duran had filmed two music videos, and after the band had existed for two years. MTV's debut came a full year after Duran's UK tour debut, opening for Hazel O'Connor and also opening the doors for record company interest.
Duran only needed MTV in terms of getting their music out to the parochial-minded American public. They didn't need MTV for any other reason. Though trying to get the band's music out to America was a heroic task. The Cars never had to do these battles, because they were already enough like the AOR the radio stations were playing to be slotted in in those playlists. That's why they never had to be creative about doing music videos. Duran always had at least some interest in doing music videos because of their experiences with going to video clubs in NYC, but they had to incorporate music video into their whole creative repetoire because that was the only way they were going to break the U.S. If there had been more Rodney Bingenheimers throughout the U.S., Duran wouldn't have had to rely so much on music video and maybe wouldn't have pressed on with doing more big-budget, cinematic videos.
You know, I really am disappointed in this thread. I had hoped that this forum would've been a friendlier forum for Duran Duran and its contemporaries. Instead I'm finding the same content I'd have expected from a music BBS from the early '80s.

Um, Japan was around since 1974, if you actually wanna talk about the inception of the band. That pretty much leaves D2 in the dust as the facsimile. In 1979, they already had [i]Quiet Life[/i] as a bona fide New Wave release. What did D2 have? Zilch. Nada.

don't be disappointed. These guys are all entitled to their opinion, even if they are wrong.[;)]
But seriously, I'm a huge Duranimal, but I do like seeing these guys' opinions on DD and why they may not love 'em like we, who are obviously in the right, do. I have to confess that I am pleased that this site has been one of the only sites that [b]does[/b] take DD seriously as musicians...you just have to read up lots. Lots of DD praise here.[8D][:)]

I'm just giving my support to KYYX and Dee[:)] I love Duran Duran and am not the least bit ashamed of it. I even love the albums that most people think were crap (Notorious, for one and several that followed).
The Cars, on the other hand, I don't like one bit. If they(and Genesis and The Police) are on the radio/t.v., I immediately change stations. I'm just not a fan.

I love DD, the first two albums... as soon as my younger sister got into Seven Tigers On The Rag, as we called it when it came out, and DD sold out the Nu-Ro mvement, I which I was in for a few months, I never really listened to anything by DD until i heard Electric Barbarella on the radiot, and thought, gee bak to their roots, so I cannot comment on what I have not listened to.
As far as The Cars go, first three albums brillient, then Shake It Up, some good songs, not good all the way through, and then I think they sold out... Heartbeat City, refuse to own it, and then some song about Strap-Ons (or whatever the ong title is), come on guys...
Story: I was introduced to The Cars while I was visiting my cousins in Canada in 1979, and we played that LP over and over again in the basement... wow eight, nine dudes with nothing better to do (???) sitting in a rompus room with the stereo cranked... we desperatly needed to find some chicks! [:p]
Later in life, my ex-wife's Sister lived in a secluded enclave in the valley of LA, and her neighbor is the guitar player, Elliot Eaton, living next door, he gave us a tour of his extensive guitar collection and gold and platinum records, it was WAY cool... [:p]

The Cars were much better in my book. Great tunes and the image was cool for guys to like. DD was a little to feminine for my tatse back when I was a teenager.

I went to high school with Elliot Easton's sisters, his real last name was'nt Easton but it was'nt bad or weird either. Why he thought that Easton was more rock I don't know....anyway, his sisters had really cool Cars jackets and shirts and wore them once in a while. I got talking to one of them at our local record shop and wound up playing music with her in her studio. They were both very low key about their famous brother and I always hoped that they would introduce me when he came home to visit but no such luck. I am signing autographs now as the guy who jammed once with the cars guitarist's sister.
