True or false: The reason that there are so many female bassists (i.e. Tina Weymouth, Kim Gordon, et. al.) is because it takes no talent to play the bass; thus, it enables a bandmate's girlfriend to join in the fun.

I think you might be mistaking the bass for the tambourine.

Sorry to be Mr. PC-but I find this offensive.
I realize that is your intent Peter, but why?
Actually if it was a racist comment you might
be booted from the board.
As Lennon said "Women is the Nigger of the World"

Why be sorry? You have as much right to say something bothers you, as much as someone has to make a stupid, immature comment.
I find it sad that people who stand up for something they beleive in, have to apologize because someone might get bent out of shape & call it "pc".
Speak your mind brother!

Suzy Quatro/Leather Tuscadero is gonna kick your ass Venkman! [:D]
Come on, do you really think these statements are that far off? It happens all the time - one of the last bands I saw, The Subways and the luscious Charlotte Cooper, is a prime example. The objection I have though is the "no talent" part. I think bass is easier to get into, but the no-talent bassists and bands don't make it, and we don't hear about them. So the primarly conclusion is wrong IMHO despite the motivation likely being pretty damned common. Just don't tell D'Arcy, Laura Ballance or the aforemention Kim Gordon.

Blir, the problem I have is with the underlying implication that women have no musical talent. I don't care about the girlfriend aspect of the question but look at the Pretenders, Chrissie was the bassist, but the band would have been nothing without her.
These things matter. It chips away at how we look at women and how women look at themselves. Who knows why there are not more female musicians, but I no part of it is comments like these.

An example of a good bassist standing on her own doesn't speak to a completely different point, just as a statement that the reason the bassist population is skewed doesn't necessarily mean the speaker is saying all women have no musical talent. [;)] No doubt that the good doctor is probably stirring the shit but let's not overreach either.

How is someone talking about women being untalented musicians a "racist" comment? Sexist, maybe...
As Lennon said "Women is the Nigger of the World"
Racist! J'accuse!
Besides, everyone knows it takes as much talent to play bass as the band requires. Three chord bands? Not too hard. Parliament/Funkadelic? A little harder.
It's hard for the wimmens to hold up the heavy instruments, ya know. That's why they invented the stand-up bass.

No talent is a bit strong. It takes little talent to play the bass badly and takes a lot of talent to play the bass well.
