You choice and your comments as to why?
If there's more than 8 albums, I've chosen the first 8. I'll compile all the results for all the bands in one place.

There are way too many of these to post comments in every one. I pick none of the above.

No, I've always noticed this. Ditto for most of the 70s bands. I think a lot of people think New Wave started with MTV when in fact it was probably the beginning of the end.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I loved most of the late 70's stuff and agree that it was FAR better than the post MTV crap .... Just not The Jam, though I will confess that I only bought Setting Sons and never really investigated them further. I'll also admit that I haven't listened to it in many years so maybe I haven't given them a fair shake. In fact, if you remember the "you know you should like them, but you don't" threads, I always listed The Jam as my answer. So ..... since I know I "should" like them, how about some recommendations on where to start? Rotator? Blir? Anyone?

The Jam "Compact Snap" is the perfect place to start...It's a little obvious, but something you may be able to find a little cheaper at a used cd store
....or just go steal it.

Oh alright, agreed! Just avoid the original 1-CD "Compact" version which excludes several tracks found on my 2-LP vinyl. There's a more recent 2-CD Snap! that restores those essential tracks:
Away from the Numbers (criminal!)
Billy Hunt
English Rose
Mr. Clean
The Butterfly Collector
Thick as Theives
Man in the Corner Shop (a heinous offense!)
Tales from the Riverbank

The Jam are one of my favorites. They weren't a real "fun" band so maybe that's why alot of people over-look them??
I went with Setting Sons, and 'All Mod Cons' would be a close 2nd. Why Sons? Of course Eton Rifles, but also Saturday's Kids and Strange Town. These are great songs!!!
It took me forever to pick up a copy of the Gift - - for some reason I'd written them off at that point. Then I heard "Ghosts" and fell in love with Weller all over again.
I agree that "Snap" is an excellent starting point.

Everyone who is into New Wave/Punk/Mod etc. really SHOULD have a turntable....I know to some of the younger set it seems a little antiquated --but I promise you, the joy you will receive from playing records will be worth it. and case in point, like Blir said above....you can find the 2 LP Compact Snap for half the price of the CD.....Having a turntable leaves you with more options in my opinion.....

I know that their "punkier" stuff is revered by all-including moi-but the gift gives us a great glimpse of what paul weller considered to be soul music-even if it is their swan song.
