Great bands- Great names

...and how did they get them! Here is the example of Joy Division and then, what later seemed to be the explanation for the name New Order.

In late 1977, in order to avoid confusion with the London punk band Warsaw Pakt, Warsaw renamed themselves Joy Division. The name was in reference to groups of Jewish women used as sex slaves in Nazi concentration camps depicted in Ka-Tzetnik 135633's 1955 novel The House of Dolls. Although the choice of name was more reflective of a desire to challenge taboos, this choice along with Sumner's adoption of the surname Albrecht garnered the band a lot of criticism for perceived insensitivity. They were even dogged by accusations of neo-Nazism, a charge they strenuously denied. The accusations resurfaced to a certain degree after Joy Division broke up and reformed as New Order, a name that referenced Hitler's speeches promising "the new order of the Third Reich."

Similar in theme...and style...

White Rose Movement - the short-lived WW2 German resistance group which called for peaceful opposition to the Nazi regime. The original five students and one teacher were all executed by beheading. It's a damned great name!

But back to New Wave...

The B-52's - not the bomber but the hairdos!

The Durutti Column - combinatino of Spanish Civil War anarchist Buenaventura Durruti and a comic strip (or column) in the paper Situationists INternationale.

Everybody knows this one too - Heaven 17 from a band in a record bin in "A Clockwork Orange"

Now if only someone can illuminate the mysterious Killer Pussy. [:o)]

Eyeless in Gaza
An Aldous Huxley novel, which in turn comes from a biblical reference to Samson after he was blinded.

"T'pau" was from an episode of the original Star Trek series called "Amok Time". If you recall, it was the one where Mr.Spock gets horny and has to return to Vulcan to mate. T'pau was a high ranking Vulcan offical....kind of a Margaret Thatcher in space.

(should I be proud or embarrassed for remembering that?)[8)]

It's not so much a biblical reference as a literary one: The exact line comes from John Milton's "Samson Agonistes" which refers to the great hero as being "eyeless in gaza".

REM

Rapid eye movement (REM) is the stage of sleep characterized by rapid saccadic movements of the eyes. During this stage, the activity of the brain's neurons is quite similar to that during waking hours; for this reason, the phenomenon is often called paradoxical sleep. Most of the vividly recalled dreams occur during REM sleep. It is the lightest form of sleep, and people awakened during REM usually feel alert and refreshed.

everyone probably knows this one:

Duran Duran got their name from the campy 60s sci-fi flick Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda. (if you haven't seen this one, try to catch it sometime, if only to howl from laughter!). Anyway, Duran Duran refers to an evil scientist in the movie who had built a "perpetual orgasm machine".

On a similar note, everyone probably knows Heaven Seventeen comes from the movie A Clockwork Orange.
Alex is in a record store and a chart behind the counter lists some bands, Heaven Seventeen is one of them.

I think the girl next to Alex in the store reads some of the names off the chart including said band.

Isn't 'The Sparks' one of the bands too?

This is the biggest photo I could find from that scene:

Tintin - and also The Thompson Twins - got their names from the Tintin comics by the Belgian comic book author Herve.

Love and Rockets were also named after a comic book.

Theatre Of Hate went on to form Spear of Destiny which was what the weapon was called that was thrust into Jesus side as he hung on the cross.

I always wondered whether Kissing The Pink refered to the snooker term or something a little more intimate.
