When the Other Guy Sings

Postby MARV » Thu May 25, 2006 3:46 am

How do we all feel about our favorite lead singers stepping aside to give the guitarist or keyboardist or whoever a chance to sing? Does it interupt your flow when listening to an album and the lead voice changes? Is this the part during a show that you go to the restroom? Or do you find added dimension to the band when you have another face to identify with?

I love it when Keith Richards sings. He's so bad he's good.

But that other guy from Goo Goo Dolls, Robby, has no business going near a mic.

Hi Marv,

I think it depends on the bands but these bands do it well:

Depeche Mode
The Cars
The Romantics
Book Of Love
Clan of Xymox
Devo
OMD

When Martin Gore sings, is incredible so there's a point there.

On Berlin's "Love Life" John Crawford did lead vocals on one song "Rumor Of Love" which happens to be my favorite from that album. Why he didn't do more is beyond me, but i guess when you have Terri Nunn to front for you most people wanted to hear and especially see her instead.

Mike Mills of R.E.M. sang on rare occasion. The song Superman comes to mind.
He sang Don't Go Back to Rockville when I saw them two years ago, and I thought he nailed it.

The two that come to mind immediately is Ben Orr covering for Rik in the Cars and Marty Wilson-Piper covering for Steve Kilbey in the Church. Both had examples of their lead vocal talents several times in their career

Squeeze comes to mind recalling some notable vocal changeups with Chris Difford, Glen Tilbrook, Jools Holland, Paul Carrack and Elvis Costello on their well known tracks.

I believe Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith regularly swapped lead vocals, but I never could really tell, because they both sound alike.

The Clash had Strummer songs and Jones songs.

The Pixies: Black Francis and Kim Deal ("Gigantic" is a great example.)

The Edge sang "Numb".

Sometimes the change is refreshing.

Husker Du pulled off the two vocalist thing better than anyone.

If the other member has a great voice....I don't mind one bit when they take the mic. Now if they suck as a singer, then i'd say just leave them to the background. "Tears for Fears" is a group that I automatically liked both, Roland and Curt's voices.

I was never a huge Beatles fan, but Blir is correct. No band pulled off dual lead vocalists better than they.
And if you toss George Harrison into the mix, you have three. I can't possibly count Ringo though.

Cream weren't too awful with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton either.

As for later bands, I'd have to go with The B-52's.

Damn you Blir[:D]. If only The Beatles had enough sense to just use two vocalists. Unfortunately, quality control was never their strong suit. If they even had a strong suit. [}:)]

Husker Du still leads the way but here's the second best band ever to use dual vocalists, the amazing 9353:

Enjoy! [8D]

One of my favorite Roxette songs is "Church of Your Heart" sung by Per Gessel.
