Academy of the Underrated

Postby EverydayItsTomorrow » Sat Jun 03, 2006 3:24 am

Well since the Academy of the Overrated seems to be filling up

Who do you think is Importance is woefully neglected?

I will nominate the Cocteau Twins.
I think the quality of there music has been hard to judge because of there consistency and complete, even now, uniqueness.

I think there influence though acknowledged, is minimized because of this.

How many times have you said "that sounds kind of like the Cocteau Twins" but it's always 'kind of' and it's never as good.

Aztec Camera for one. But Real Life is one of my top 5 bands! They had some great tracks besides their smash hit, "Send Me An Angel"!

Talk Talk were popular at that time so I can't choose them.

For me:

Dekka Danse
Ca Va Ca Va
Leisure Process
The Mood
The Pinkees
Music For Pleasure
Frank Chickens [;)]
The Truth
Europeans
Yachts

True enough. I was thinking more of Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock than of their better known material. Plus, even if they were considered absolute gods by everybody, they'd STILL be underrated. [:)]

This really really is a biggie. Wasn't there a big thread on them awhile back? The Chameleons are up there too.

Oingo Boingo.

Difficult to market. Difficult to categorize. Not sexy.

Extremely talented. Extremely creative.

Even though they were able to break into a handful of Hollywood films, their popularity was for the most part regionalized in California.

A few bands whose "hit" single seemed to obscure the fact that they made really great overall records: Dream Academy, The Church, Translater, Wire Train, Big Country.

Not New Wave but totally underated: Van Der Graaf Generator. Everybody throws roses at Pink Floyd but VDGG was incredible.

Ditto.

I would also add Concrete Blonde to the list. "Joey" was their hit but they had many other great songs.
