Live or Memorex?

Postby Spaz » Sun Jun 18, 2006 12:46 am

Another vaguely similar poll to the vinyl master one....

A band you REALLY loved in the '80s have a song or two on comp CDs, but no official CD release of their own. Then, one day, you find out that a CD by this band is coming out, but it is a live recording. Let's just assume that it is legitimate, great sound quality and recorded during their heyday.

Would you buy it?

I used to be very anti-live..."it just doesn't sound as good as the studio version". No duh...what a dork I was. Now I love the energy and alt interpretations of those versions, however imperfect they may be.

It depends how they sound live, not the quality of the recording but the quality of the performance. There are some bands who can cut a great record in the studio, but their live performance leave a lot to be desired. I'd probably still get it if it's a band/artist that I really really like[}:)]

Yeah, it depends ... I would leech it first to hear what it sounds like and decide from there.

But I doubt this situation would happen anyways. A live album before a studio album/compilation?

I only tend to buy live stuff when I have the studio stuff. Mind you I did buy a NIN live album before I got the studio stuff and that is very good so maybe it does depend on the band.

Unfortunately, it happens. Not as much now, but it does. For example, there was a Plimsouls live CD available for years before Rhino and Geffen released their studio stuff. Another example would be the Big Sound Authority. They have a live CD coming out (recorded back in the day) and no studio CD available.
