Somehow I didn't like the combiantion of reggae and new wave. For me, they were like polar opposites.

New wave/punk bands embraced reggae/dub since the late 70's (Clash, Ruts, Slits, Police...) So much so that it even inspired Bob Marley to record "Punky Reggae Party" in 1977.

To say nothing of the Two-Tone ska movement.

Thanks, Rewind...

And not to mention Dred Meets Punk Rockers Uptown by King Tubby, but what I want is bands that are most obviously New Wave who are using a Reggae style. And I want Track names too, not just the band. I should also mention, I prefer OLDER New Wave to later 80's/90's bands.

I forgot one song:

The Tide Is High - Blondie.

I think that The Police, UB40 and Blondie were the most importnat bands that added reggae to their music.
Same for The Clash among punk bands.

ummm....Bad Brains?

The Members-Offshore Banking Business

Leave us not forget the reggae groups who kind of flourished in the new wave atmosphere like Steel Pulse...there's no doubt that punk (especially in the UK)embraced reggae.

Anything from The Specials pretty much screams this topic.

.. Ghost Town, Message to you (Rudy) etc etc..

Maybe because you be 40? (such is my case this year....yeesh.)

I recall the Police debut was called 'white reggae' by more than one writer at the time it came out.

punk and reggae were always closely linked. Johnny Rotten was always listening to dub, and you hear it in the PiL's bass. The Clash weren't ashamed of their reggae influence.

But for strictly new wave, it seems like everywhere you turned there was a reggae influence. I just listened to Any Trouble's "Second Choice" and the verses have that 'new wave reggae influence'. The intro to Novo Combo's "Up Periscope" has it to.

I always considered reggae and the Two-Tone/I.R.S. bands to be subsets of the larger, broad term "New Wave." That's why New Wave has continued to be one of my favorite pop genres, because there was such a diversity in styles and sound within it that I don't think any "movement" today captures.

British Ska was an early favorite of mine: The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter, and Madness!

It was awesome when Suggs from Madness was in the video for the rerelease of Bob Marley's One Love.
