New Wave 'samples' on other songs

Postby bpdp3 » Mon Jun 19, 2006 11:36 am

I'll be surprised if this topic hasn't been done before, but I don't ever remember it...

Had the dubious pleasure of hearing "The Macarena" on the radio today and there in the song was the Alf Moyet giggle used in "Situation" (actually a pretty common sample in late 80's house music as I recall).

Made me want to think of others. "Guns of Brixton" bassline on 'Dub be good to Me' and Smiths' "How soon is Now" on Soho's 'Hippychick' are two examples I recall from the late 80's/early 90's.

Help me build a list.

Set Adrift on memory Bliss by PM Dawn heavily used samples from "True" by Spandau Ballet. (Isn't Tony Hadley in the video as well somewhere?)

Man there are heaps (let me think a while)

"Puffy" Coombs just takes the entire non-vocal tracks from
Notorious Duran Duran
Every Breath You Take The Police

Best use of a New Wave sample:
Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa samples from Trans Europe Express by Kraftwerk

here in England they are always digging up 80s songs and building songs around them, they've done it with 'Valerie and 'Doctor Beat' of late. But I'd classify it more than sampling because there's so much in there. Lazy dance bands![|)]

Just goes to show that none of the above mentioned can write thier own stuff. On the other hand, it also shows that they know a good tune when they hear it.

I was shopping in a store and I talked to the cashier, they were playing cool older music and she said she liked it because now she knew where they got the music for all the new songs she listened to :)

I couldn't place this one for a long time since the sample is highly stylized: Are Friends Electric by Gary Numan is sampled in the Beastie Boys' Super Disco Breakin'.

Ironically, I heard the samples in early Beastie Boys material before getting to know the 70s classic rock that was sampled by them.

Destiny's Child sampled from Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" in one of their last songs...which one was it? "Bootylicious" ? (Don't ask me how I know this)

I heard the same song twice last night, and it was that Rhianna song that samples "Tainted Love." She should be buried alive for that.

I'm hearing a distinctly New Order drum beat in this track. Can't seem to place my finger on which one it is though [:D] It comes in about halfway through.....
