Coconut Rough

Anybody remember the New Zealand band Coconut Rough? Lead singer Andrew Snoid was with The Swingers for their final single (post album) and he was also the main man in Pop Mechanics, another overlooked New Zealand band.

Anyway, Coconut Rough had a big hit called 'Sierra Leone' and a self-titled album. They sounded like 'Time And Tide'/'Conflicting Emotions' era Split Enz, with Andrew's vocals sounding somewhere in between former Enzer Phil Judd and Neil Finn!

Anyway, I've just heard two unreleased solo tracks from Andrew and they are really good. Especially one called 'Bangin' On The Table'.

I own four singles, no album.

"Sierra Leone" is one (B-side is "Monkey Puzzle"). The others are "Magic Hour"/"Passenger Seat," "As Good as It Gets"/"Balancing Act" and "Leisure Time"/"Once in a While." Nice picture sleeves on 3 of those. Phil Judd, ironically, did the coconut painting on the cover of "Magic Hour."

You have any of those? Not my favorite early '80s Kiwi band (their songwriting was nowhere near the league of Split Enz, no matter how much "Sierra Leone" tries to be them), but they were OK. "As Good as It Gets" is my favorite out of those. Sounds more like "Waiata"/"Corroboree" period.
