What Does the Song Mean?

Postby MARV » Thu Jun 29, 2006 5:56 am

Do you care? Or have you ever thought a song meant one thing but found out that it meant another?

If I've ever been drawn into the lyrics of a particular artist that I really follow then yeah, I'll have probably taken a stab at interpreting them. Sometimes I'm wrong or sometimes I find out there's more to it than I initially figured out. I do love lyrics, language and poetry though. That's always been a major draw for alot of the music I like. Sometimes I'll find out the meaning of a song that I never really paid much attention to and then come to appreicate it.

It took awhile before the meaning of U2's Gloria dawned on me. I don't really mind though - I just pretend it's something else and try not to hold it against them.

That happens to me all the time. Lyrics I thought meant one thing back in the day turn out to mean something different altogether. I used to be so dense about lyrics.

I'm still confused on Blondie's "The Hardest Part." I suspect it's not really about an armoured car.

Then there's all those Kate Bush & Stevie Nicks songs...what the hell are they singing about???

It was only 2 years ago that I realized the mother in "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" wasn't really making out with Santa, but the father.

Come on Motors, where's your commentary on that linked page! Sounds like even some of the most ardent atheists have been touched by U2's confession of faith - could'nt you find it in yourself to be similiarly moved? [;)] [:D] [;)]

Say what? Wolvie. Marvy needs further explanation. Immediately. Do share with us the details of this epiphany.

LOL Marv. Let's just say I have my own lyrics I use when I sing along with the chorus. Only "Gloria" and "loosen(ed) lips" remain intact. Needless to say, it's a huge improvement. [:D][}:)]

I think I finally listened to the song and my amazing powers of deduction led me to the sad conclusion that Santa wouldn't be making out with some hussy while the kids watched. Thus, it must be dad dressed as santa that the nosey little kid saw.

But then, that leads me to ask the question: "Why would dad be dressed as Santa if they all assumed all the kid was asleep?" Perhaps mom & dad had a yuletide log to burn....[}:)]

Killing An Arab by the Cure was mistaken for an anti-Arab song for years but it's the other way around I believe.

Alot of the U2 catalog and the Alarm catalog can be taken as religious if that's how you want to interpret them.

It's taken from Albert Camus's The Stranger. I suppose in the book, there are some anti-Arab sentiments displayed by a couple of the characters, but it's not an anti-Arab book.
