Self-portraits of New Wave Stars

Whenever I ran into an artist I liked, I used to collect a "self portrait." Lots more interesting than just an autograph (though I am proud owner of Lloyd Cole's "first US" autograph, shortly before NME named him "Wally of the Year" back home).

Here's a link to some of the more interesting ones I got (XTC, Weller, Squeeze, Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Rotten) and my two-bit psychoanalysis of them: http://hometown.aol.com/dougmash/selfport.html

If anyone has other self portraits, or a link to any, I'd love to see them!
Cheers,

Those are GREAT, and definately a mile away from a simple autograph. Have you ever had people turn you down, or just go "what the fukk??"

If I ever get to my folks' place this fall, I'll try to dig up my old, old issues of Star Hits magazine. One article (circa 1986 perhaps?) had all these artists doing self-portraits. If I recall correctly, Neil Arthur (of Blancmange) and Simon LeBon did awesome ones, more in the vein of caricatures (and self-parody) than serious drawings. Ohhh, I hope I still have those mags in storage!

Nobody turned me down, though a few (John Wesley Harding & Paul from Mighty Lemon Drops among others) said they couldn't draw! I chickened out on a few (Joey Ramone being the one I regret the most), and some were done on album covers so they don't scan well, but artists tend to like the challenge of being "artists!"

Those are great.

Paul Weller can draw pretty well but he thinks he looks like Pete Townshend!
