What To Do With All These CASSETTES?

I hate to throw them away as they were such an important part of my life. But I have so many of them, they're just taking up space and I never really use them. Are nostalgia and posterity reason enough to hang onto them? I even have them organized in those neat little cases with the drawers [:p] Seriously though, I've replaced most all of them digitally. I feel like they belong in a museum or something! If you ask me, these tapes are inferior to CD's in just about every way but there's just something about them.....

Maybe I'll just keep them stowed in the garage and break them out when I'm hanging out in the yard grilling or whatever. I found an old boom box in the garage that plays them just fine.

True story from May of this year:

On the way to the San Diego Sports Arena Swap Meet with my 11 year old son in a rental car. He starts laughing at the stereo, and asks where the cd slot is. I tell him, it doesn't have a cd player, it has a casette deck. After staring at me puzzled I asked him if he knew what that was. He said no so I had to show him one once we got to the swap meet. He said "That's stupid".
It was overpriced at $.10

Toss 'em!![}:)]

See if a charity shop (is it called goodwill in the States?) will take them, they still sell that stuff sometimes, I still have tapes but not that many. If I had alot I'd give them away to charity. Just because there is enough landfill and another man's trash is another man's treasure, always sell, give away if you can and bin as a last option.[:D]

While I've converted everything on mine to CD-R, or bought the actual CD's that came out, I still keep mine in those case drawers also. A lot of time went into making those, and many have artists/songs that still have not and maybe never will see a CD release. So I plan to keep them as another backup plus the nostalgia factor I guess. Though I would recommend keeping them in a place other than the garage due to heat/cold. You just never know if you will have to re-record some rare track to CD from a cassette some day. In addition to writing on the cassette cases, I always maintained a spiral noteboook log of all my cassettes, the date made, and all the detailed info of each cassette - artists, songs, rlease dates, etc....since I could fit this in the book. When I did my conversions to CD-R years ago, this came in real handy.

Well your tapes have cousins in my basement as well. Most are digitized and I can't bear just throwing them out or to goodwill.

Keep them so that your great-grandchildren can see how music was kept in the past...
I really liked to find out that my ancestors had kept a gramophon, it was funny playing those thick old discs from the 20's and 30's.

Oddly enough I never bought pre-recorded cassettes. I never bought 8-tracks. I always bought the vinyl and got into the habit of taping it onto cassette immediatly. Of course, some lp's STILL got beat into the ground. ( The Cars-The Cars for example. )

After I ripped all the rare tracks to cd, I gave them all away in the marketplace. Out of sight..out of mind. Don't miss them at all.

I did the same with all of my 45's over the past year, and now i'm figuring out what to do with the LP's.

Get rid of 'em Marv!!

Last month I dragged out my box of cassettes and wondered why I was hanging onto them. I have everything either on cd, mp3 or vinyl anyways. What I didn't have, I simply found on the hub.

I put two garbage bags full of tapes to the curb & haven't given them a second thought. I even tossed all the tapes I made when I briefly (and badly) dj'd in a club. I might as well destroy all evidence of that nightmare![:D]

Pre-recorded cassettes I could care less about. But the mix-tapes made by myself of friends I want to keep in the form I originally enjoyed them. Something inexplicably cool about a mix tape sitting there on your dash.

I have the same issue with cassettes. I have a bunch of them, and they are all either replaced by CD or burned onto CD, but for some reason there are certain ones I just can't bring myself to throw away. It's a sentimental thing, I think [:)]

When I was confident I had everything on my cassettes either on CD or mp3 I tossed my cassettes out. Haven't missed them at all.

I nver got into pre-recorded cassettes. Mine are ones I've made, from my 45's, vinyl, etc, and there are many many rarities that I doubt will ever see the light of day on CD. So I will keep them, plus for me, they mean alot to me, CD or no CD.

Oh marv, I feel your pain!

I too have wondered what to do w/ all my cassettes. My husband came up with an idea that I should all the covers and put them into a photo album. That way, I can still hang on to the nostalgia aspect, without taking up a lot of space. And besides, much as I love those tapes, they play horribly now. Age has not been kind to them. Many of them have dropped out, with all kinds of strange fadeouts and volume distortions. Not to mention they squeak terribly. So playing them is no longer an option. They're that bad ! And I took care of them, too! I did not expose them to heat/ cold/ dust.

I haven't begun putting together the photo album yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I love all those cover artworks, liner notes, and song lyrics. (I did not have albums).

After reading through this thread I realized that along with all my mix tapes that went into the trash - I also tossed the covers I made.
Now that's something I will probably regret since I can't recreate a particular tape. Although it's doubtful I'd remember anything associated with that tape except "we got in the car...did some stuff...then I woke up.."
