There are alot of contrived American accents in British music. I hate that! I like those that sing in their "own voice". Morrissey, Billy Bragg and Saint Etienne immediately come to mind. Any others? How do you feel about foreign artists faking American accents?

Zodiac Mindwarp was always accused of singing in an American accent, as well as his stage banter. He replied that he wasn't using an American accent, he was using a Rock And Roll accent.
One of the old punk bands I used to play in always got accused of the singer faking an English accent. He always denied it, even when faced with recordings of his performances. We always gave him endless shit about it, and he either was in denial or truly didn't think he was doing it.

I guess it really doesn't bug me too much.
But when I think of fake accents, Al "I Totally Disown With Sympathy" Jourgenson's mockney comes to mind[:p]

I always thought that when the English/British sang, it sounded just like our American English, as we sing, and then all those Oi, and later non-Ska Skinhead (Cocney rejects, The Upstarts, the Biz, et al)bands with their cockney accents, as well as all those British punk bands (Sex Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks) using their "real" voices... so did the likes of Martin Fry of ABC, Adam Ant of Adam And The Ants, etc. (Echo, DM, DD, and the list goes on) change their voices????
Of note, I once interviewed Ultravox for my college newspaper, and I couldn't understand anything Midge Ure and those guys said... even though I taped the conversation/interview... thick Scotish accents... on LP, they sound great... makes you think...
Thanks for this topic, marvymarv, u ROC and Rule!!!
