History Repeats...

Postby zalasta » Sun Jul 23, 2006 11:48 pm

A couple people mentioned in another thread about how "The Lebanon" by Human League seems particularly appropriate right now. The same thought came to me when I heard "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood recently. It seemed like it could have been written last week.

What other songs from the early to mid-80's are particularly relevent now, with all the troubles going on in the world?

i was thinking of putting together a mixed CD with this theme, and I could use some suggestions...

1. Two Tribes - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
2. The Lebanon - Human League
3.... ?

I thought New Order's "Love Vigilantes" was very striking when I heard it in concert last year. Bernard Sumner said "That was a song about Vietnam", but some of the words are dead-on for today:

Oh I've just come
From the land of the sun
From a war that must be won
In the name of truth.
With our soldiers so brave
Your freedom we will save
With our rifles and grenades
And some help from god. [ ...seems like everyone's absolute moral conviction]

Sunday Bloody Sunday- U2

Broken bottles under childrens feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I wont heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall...

And the battles just begun
Theres many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart...

And its true we are immune
When fact is fiction and tv reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

Good Call, KYYX. I think that song could be the soundtrack to the last 5 years or so.

Also,
Lose Face, The Fixx (We all breathe the same air/yet we all die for the airspace..)
It's A Mistake, Men At Work
Where the Rose is Sown, Big Country

Don't you know that history never repeats? At least that's what I tell myself before I go to sleep [:)]

Wow. You forget how damned good and passionate some of their early writing was!

I've said it before and I'll say it again-

Charlie Don't Surf by The Clash

becomes more relevant as the years go by.

The reign of the super powers must be over
So many armies can't free the earth
Soon the rock will roll over
Africa is choking on their Coca Cola

It's a one a way street in a one horse town
One way people starting to brag around
You can laugh, put them down
These one way people gonna blow us down

Wait till you see the video! LOL.

Anyway, here's one of my all-time fave songs:

Red skies at night
Wo oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night
Wo oh oh oh oh

Should have taken warning it's just
People mourning
Running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go

Red skies at night
Wo oh

Should have taken warning it's just
People mourning
Running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go

Red skies at night
Wo oh
Red skies at night
Wo oh oh

Someone's takin' over
And it looks like they're aiming
Right at you
Someone said we'll be dead by morning
Someone cries leaving

Red skies at night
Wo oh oh...

* Yay, now I can't stop singing!!![}:)]
