Isn't the point more that they were both irresponsible? [;)]

I dunno.. its a tough long standing argument, hence I have not voted.

My view is that the ramones were responsible for a lot that the greater public didn't know about but the pistols got more publicity..

I agree with tragicMagic, that Ramones did more, and Sex Pistols got all the publicity. Both bands were irresponsible, hell yes... [}:)]

I think it's pretty well-documented that the Ramones preceded the Pistols on a timeline-basis, and were probably an influence on the early pistols.

However, the Pistols had the whole look, attitude and spectacle, which became associated with Punk - - not too many other punk groups wearing hair as long as the Ramones (yes, as trivial as it seems I think hair length had a lot to do with it). Seems the Pistols took their haircuts from Richard Hell, then in an early version of Television.

I go with the Pistols, although the Ramones' getting things stirred up in the early CBGB's scene shouldn't be dismissed.

In the Uk I guess the Sex Pistols really but I guess the Ramones came before, everybody knows punk really started in the States it was just Malcolm Mc Claren that capitalised on it which is why people think of the UK groups more when they think of original punk...

No contest. Without the Sex Pistols the whole style of the movement would have gone in a different (MUCH less interesting) direction. The Ramones did not have a very inspiring style, plus their music was way too complacent.

The Ramones edge out the pistols for me. Although, I do think that without all of the other NY groups and the media circus around the Sex Pistols, the Ramones would never have gotten the attention & respect they deserve.

The amount of "manufacturing" that went into the sex pistol's & their image reminds me of latter day boy-bands. Fortunatly there was some substance there. I appreciate that they motivated a huge legion of fans and a whole movement.

I don't know if I can make an educated vote though - music-wise: Ramones.
Style, attitude and media attention: Malcom McLaren & the pistols.

Agreeing with the pervious posters, The Ramones started it, the Pistols made it a household phenom worldwide.

How about a 3rd voting option for the punkest answer of all: "Who Cares?"

Definitely Ramones.I am currently reading the New York Dolls bio Too Much Too Soon and it claims both the Dolls and Iggy were huge influences on the upcoming punks we all knew and loved.

not to mention vivienne westwoods influence on the 'punk' fashion of the day.
