New wave mispronounciation...

So many of the groups, names, etc only got mentioned through print-media (Trouser Press, etc) for me back then, that I had often had to "wing it" on how to pronounce some of the names.

Was Pere Ubu supposed to be Pair Yooboo or Pere Ooboo?

And how do you pronounce those early Police album names (or those Nina Hagen song titles)??

Surely you must have some examples....

don't get me started on Einstürzende Neubauten [:D]

I'm not 100% positive on my pronunciation of

- Ceta Javu

- Les Rita Mitsouko (despite years of French, I don't think I'll ever get this one right)

- a:Grumph

- Nitzer Ebb (is it NITTzer or NIGHTzer?)

I've always called them Neetzer Ebb.

And in my head I've always called that 1st group Einstein Noobotin!!

I always thought it was Pair Ooboo and Nitt-zer Ebb.

After all my years in Germany I have no trouble at all with Neubauten. The one that always killed me for some reason was Die Ärzte. I couldn't say it without cracking my German friends up but that's cool because none of them could say "rear view mirror". [:D]

That Rita Mitsuoko one looks pretty tough too. [B)]

Ein-ster-zender Noy-bahtten
Pear Ooboo
Zen Yahtta Men Dahtta

And although I've always said Nit-ser Ebb, there was a big campaign in the early 90's to teach America that it's actually NIGHT-zerr Ebb.

Also, according to Gerry Casale, the band should be called dee-VOH.

I think I pronounce it like that. [8D] But I'm not sure if it's OK.

My fave was always Husker Du....I remember the old commercials for the Norwegian game and it used to drive me nuts when people said "Husker" as opposed to "Hoos-ker".

"Husker Du means Do You Remember? The great new game sensation that's sweeping Norway!"

I remember INXS referred to as "Inks" on more than one occasion....

And then there was this girl I knew from High School who, trying to be "in" with us new wave geeks, said she loved "A Way" by Bolshoi, pronouncing it as Bol-shwa.

So when I said, that's funny, the DJ's pronounce it as Bol-shoy, she said, they probably got it wrong. That's how the French pronounce it.

... Duh!

Actually I DO want to know how to pronounce Belouis Some

Is it like "Be" or "Bell" | "Lou-is" or "Louie" or "lwa" and is it "Sum" or "So-mé"?

I don't really know how to say it, but I tend to go French with this one and say "Bel-lwa So-mé"
