I was at the MN state fair the other day, and walked by the Oldies station(108). They had some bumper mentioning the 60s and 70s.
Then what do they play? "Don't Stand so Close to me" by The Police. Have we gone that far forward in time that the oldies stations are now playing 80s music?
This is getting weird.

Yes, oldies stations put on The Police... at least here in Argentina they do.
I listen mostly to oldies stations... they got the best tracks selections.

If you think about it, when we were kids in the '80s, the Oldies stations were playing music from the '50s and '60s, then only 20 - 30 years old. So music from 1984 or so is now 22 years old...right on the money. [:(]

Yep.. 80's is generally on the 'oldies' stations over here in Australia..however.. a couple of stations still feature 80's hours etc in with new music. I think Australia is in the process of "turning"..we are seeing more 90's themes in clubs and 90's specials etc on the radio. 80's will officially be 'oldies' music within 2 years I reckon.

You think that's weird? On the local "classic rock" station here, "I Got You" by Split Enz is played fairly regulary. I have to smirk every time I hear it on there.

I just heard Nirvana is now considered "Classic", fitting into the repitoire of songs like Men At Works 'Down Under'...that makes me feel old.

Seriously?! If our classic rock station played that song, gangs of tatooed Harley heshers would riot in front of the station and demand they stop "playin' that fag music." What station is it....Q104.3?

Well, I guess we have to admit it that these songs are relatively old enough to be considered as "OLDIES". But I prefer it to be called RETRO 80s or CLASSIC 80s.Much better than CLASSIC ROCK[:(!]?[8D]

A lot depends on the song,.
An Oldies station would probably play "Don't Stand So Close to Me" or "Roxanne" because they symbolize a bygone era and (mainstream) listeners can't relate to them anymore.
But classic rock stations and even Adult Contemporary or Soft Rock still play "Every Breath You Take," because it's a song that still appeals to a wide audience.
This could make a good thread. New Wave Oldies vs. New Wave Classic Rock. Maybe I'll start one.

A local oldies station played "Canary In A Coalmine" the other day. I about fell over when I heard the familiar twang of Andy Summers' guitar...

I've probably mentioned it before, but the revelation hit me when I heard Whitesnake as muzak in the grocery store. I was like, "don't tell me 80's music has been reduced to this." Although the plus side is; now that 80's songs are "muzak" you hear them everywhere. I mean I used to work in a mall, and it was the happiest day of my life when they started playing Benjamin Orr - Stay the Night on a regular basis.

I absolutely love Canary in a coalmine. [:D]
Takes me back to 2004 when I spent loads of hours listening to the police.
