What 60s Band do you think could have been considered into the NEW WAVE GENRE? Here's my small lists:
THE ZOMBIES
THE MONKEES
THE ANIMALS
VELVET UNDERGROUND
THE MAMAS AND PAPAS
THE BYRDS
THE TROGGS

Troggs is case of a 60s band that really went new wave.Their live lp''Live at Max's kansas city''from Max's Kansas City records is punky and has its moments.Then-
Velvet Underground-personal careers of John Cale,Moe Tucker and even Lou Reed(Metal Machine Music lp)could be described as highly experimental.
Some more bands
The Monks(60s proto-punk garage punks)
Pretty Things
The Who and even very early Pink Floyd with Syd Barett(more punk then new wave...).

Excellent choices DSR! These bands never seem to get the credit they deserve for being new wave forebears. I would also like to throw in a few more for you to check out:
THE COWSILLS
1910 FRUITGUM CO.
OHIO EXPRESS (It's obvious Echo and The Bunnymen listened to these guys a lot)
PETER, PAUL AND MARY (although Puff the Magic Dragon is probably a little too punk)

New wave and punk progenitors:
? and the Mysterians
Love
13th Floor Elevators
The Seeds
The Count 5
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
The Barbarians
The Sonics
That's all I can think of right now, and I'm too lazy to go dig out my "Nuggets" discs.

Easily: The Doors. Also, the Zombies sound a lot like the Pale Fountains and the Lotus Eaters -- great pick! I'll add Every Mother's Son and, of course, the Beatles. There's a good reason why Goth rockers loved covering "Tomorrow Never Knows." And let's not forget Pink Floyd!

Well, I guess MIKE your mentor GMA has really good taste because this 60s bands I listed were included on the mix format of 99.5RT "ALL NEW RHYTHM AND ROCK" format. NEW WAVE combine with 60s influences. EXCELLENT!!![:D]

The Kinks (if we're counting Power Pop as New Wave)

The Kinks and The Who then too!
Added: And don't forget The Velvet Underground! (I think just about every band lists them as an influence.) [8D]

I'd say Ian McCullough must have at least once listened to the band Fever Tree. They have a few songs that certainly sound like they influenced some of the music on Ocean Rain, and the vocals......Ian's vocal style was foretold by Fever Tree.
How about the 5th Dimension - Up, Up and Away certainly had some Devo-like qualities.........

Well, each of the bands mentioned has at least a new wave song. I go with The Byrds and The Zombies.
The Beatles song Tomorrow Never Knows and Strawberry Fields Forever sounded new wave to me.

I see that the most important 60's band that influenced just about every 80's New Wave artist, especially Madness(but they were Ska and really not New Wave, but still acted like they were New Wave in their videos)and took their weirdness from them was the band Freddie and The Dreamers.Remember Do The Freddie? How can we all forget that silly dance? It just reminds me alot of any Madness weird video, like One Step Beyond,or House Of Fun.Can anyone see the similar similarities between the two groups?
Maybe that is how Devo came about by watching Freddie and The Dreamers? Or even The B 52's?
