Thrift store cassette buzzkill

So I hopped in my Spitfire and went to Goodwill, out of pure boredom. I found a New Kids on the Block cassette. No, I found 2! I bought the uncracked one. That and I found an old PKZIP manual from 1992. Total geek nostalgia.

I hop in my car, pop it in the cassette player(it's an old car) and hope to blast "The right stuff". But before popping it in, I notice tape on the write-protect tabs. I didn't notice it while in the store, but here it is. Of course, the track I wanted to hear got taped over by 93X(rocks!) aircheck. No, I don't want to hear "Can't find my way home".

Total buzzkill. The first track on the other side was one I remembered though. Of course my stereo's casette deck, covered in cobwebs are 100% non functional. The left casette deck door is ripped off, the right just doesn't do anything. So I played it on a walkman-like casette recorder that sounded like a Dalek.

Something didn't want me to listen to the New Kids.

And that was the day's thrift store buzzkill. See if I ever return to that store.

Talking of thrift stores, how about this. I'm in Memphis last Thursday, getting a little lost looking for a government building. Decide to go into a miniscule thrift store in a seedy part of town to ask directions. Casually peruse the typical half dozen battered, cracked and CD-case only items on a table. Discover, right in the middle, a copy of Secession's A Dark Enchantment CD. With the original case. And import sticker and price tag ($22.95). With the CD. Booklet in great shape. CD has no marks at all. You could have blown me down with a feather. Naturally, I bought it for $1.09, including tax. Just goes to show, you never can tell, huh?

Years ago I was walking on a street in Manhattan's West Village. I happen to look down at the ground right where I was walking over and see a jewel case scuffed, scratched and broken apart. Out of pure curiosity I pick up the pieces and am stunned to find myself holding a Factory Records release of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. CD and inner cards (made of a lovely rising line cardstock) in practically mint condition, I bring them all home and put them in a new jewel case. I still get excited thinking about my good fortune that day, lol!

Kim's on St. Marks just had a copy of that Unknown Pleasures used for $20. They sold it, but you can still get their copy of Closer on the Factory label for just a dollar less (until that one gets sold, too).

Last week I found New Order - Republic (CD) in Goodwill for $1.99. It's in like-new condition. Granted, it's not rare or anything, but it makes up for all the absolute crap that I usually find there.

I think it's a sign, Manekineko! You're destined to join the club and become a New Order fan of the highest um...ORDER! [:p]

That's like when I found Cornershop's "When I Was Born For The 7th Time" for a dollar at a Salvation Army store. I love the graphic design of that cover.

PS- That's a pretty good price, ST.

That reminds me, I should go hit the used record store appropriately named "Landfill". I swear it has every remaining copy of "Frampton Comes Alive!" there.
