Album Comparisons: Sandinista!

Postby skinnytie » Mon Sep 11, 2006 1:56 pm

Not my favorite Clash album, for sure, but one that was quite intriguing, for sure. I was one of those who thought it would have made a decent single album (or a fantastic EP), but even still, when it was first released, it was the only album on my turntable for 3 weeks.

Anyway, I had used this album to make comparisons to other band's albums. For example, to me:

"English Settlement" was XTC's Sandinista! (probably due to the less sleek production, and it was not a single album)

"13th Floor Madness" was 999's Sandinista! (again, probably due to the production and because of the wider range of instruments used, though less intriguing to me)

Did any of you do the same thing? If so, which albums did you compare to which? Or does anyone have any more Sandinista! comparisons? Or am I just being a geek again? [:D]

Hmmm, good question Skinnytie. I love "Sandinista"! I've always thought of it as the Clash's version of the Stones "Exile On Main Street". They're both cool in that you can always find new or weird songs that you had previously skipped, unlike your basic 10-12 song album where you know everything.

I also think it could have been one great album, but I still like the fact that you can poke around and find something new everytime you listen to it. And a handful of songs are among the Clash's best!

I'm recalling, that The Clash wanted to release Sandanista! as a double, double album (4 discs), at the price of a single LP, and that CBS/Epic Records make them only release 3 LPs for the price of a double album.

Does anyone know if this is/was true? And where is the material from the fourth disc? If they indeed did record enough material for 4 discs?!

My second favorite Clash album, right after London Calling! [:p]

It's a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod, World!

Some Brit friends tell me that they understood it was the Clash's intent to make Sandinista into a sort of "mix" album...that there were a variety of thematic and musical motifs running through it, so fans were supposed to take the bits and pieces they liked at a given time and put them together as they saw fit. The album was supposed to take on a different character for different people at different times.K inda makes sense I guess.

To the question...um, ELO's Out of the Blue? [:I]

Okay, I guess The Cure's Head on the Door might be a better example, especially if you key in the 'diverse' and 'different' link to Sandinista.
