Songs KROQ Played That Wasn't NEW WAVE

I thought I'd start a thread based on this topic. Going through the year-end lists I see lots of songs that strangely weren't new wave but were obviously played a lot on Kroq back in the day. Stuff like Cyndi Lauper and Wham. This is funny, Hall & oates' out of touch was on the year end chart in 1984. Elton John also had a song in one of the lists too. Lots of synthetic stuff like Magazine 60's Don Quichotte. And Tone Loc's Wild Thing was in the year-end list top TEN in 1988.

There was probably a lot more. What other stuff did KROQ play at the time that wasn't necessarily new wave or didn't fit their usual format ?
Anyone remember any?

What an excellent topic, jumpshift. I was thinking about this just the other day.

I remember that they played Matthew Wilder's Break My Stride, though I'm not sure if that's classified as not new wave. Also, I distinctly remember that they played a Def Leppard song a couple times (I can't remember what it was. Photograph, maybe?).

The Kinks' "Give the people what they want" was very popular...with me too. Lennon's "Just like starting over" was annoying overplayed for awhile there. I didn't mind Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" so much. I would get pretty incensed by Billy F'ing Squire's "The Stroke"...I'd flip off the stereo in absolute disgust.

Billy Squier--"the Stroke"

Many Rolling Stones songs such as "She's So Cold," "Waiting For a Friend," "Undercover of the Night" and "Harlem Shuffle"

Brain Wilson--"Love and Mercy"

I think they played AC/DC too, if I remember correctly.

Oh man, there are so many. But you might want to limit yourself to a time period, say, 1979->1991 because outside of this, it wasn't the 'rock of the 80's' format. But during it's heyday, KROQ leavened the new wave with lots of regular rock, pop and soul. Just some off the top of my head:

AC/DC - back in black, big balls, dirty deeds, basically any track
Rolling Stones - undercover of the night, emotional rescue, shattered
Genesis - abacab, misunderstanding, turn it on again
Gap Band - burn rubber, you dropped a bomb on me
Shalamar - dead giveaway
Grace jones - Walking in the rain, pull up to the bumper
joan armatrading - drop the pilot, call me names
aswad - don't turn around (made more famous by ace of base, but this one is better)
lou reed - dirty boulevard
grandmaster flash - white lines (huge, played forever), magic carpet ride
king crimson - elephant talk, heartbeat...

this could go on for days

If including reggae, you need to include Bob Marley and Ziggy Marley There used to be a Sunday show on reggae music, however.

Here's another one, I recalled:

"Knocking on Heaven's Door"--Guns n Roses

I remember Freddie Snakeskin would always play the old '60s ska tune "Double Barrel" by Dave and Ansell Collins - great tune!

Snakeskin would always throw in some old blues song partly just to piss people off, I think. I miss the irreverence of the old days.

Remember when "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc became such a huge hit that even KROQ started playing it?

I just happen to still have the 1995 list of KROQ's "500 Biggest Songs Of All Time". Check this out:

#486 Let's Go All The Way- Sly Fox

#398 Tarzan Boy- Baltimora

#378 Orinocco Flow- Enya

#358 Caribbean Blue- Enya

#246 What I LIke- Edie Brickell

#228 Living On Video- Trans-X

#184 White Lines- Grandmaster Flash

#126 One Night In Bangkok- Murray Head

#89 I Don't Like Mondays- Boomtown Rats

#23 Space Oddity- David Bowie

Plus lots of Marley sprinkled throughout. Of course, in 1995 The Grunge Movement was in full swing and #1 was Black by Pearl Jam.

Oh my gosh. I totally forgot:

This Could Be The Night--The Modern Folk Quartet, played at the beginning of every Rodney on the ROQ show.

NOTHING in the world like it man! There are a LOT of emotive neurotransmitters that come on every time I hear that song.

I think he actually was a real fan, he wasn't playing them for irony. He always had a James Brown cd with him.

IIRC, KROQ broke it at about the same time as everyone else, if not sooner. Lewis hated it because it sampled Van Halen's Jamie's crying.

Wild Thing also reached #15 on 91x's year-end countdown that same year.
