.....miss the old style twelve inches? When it was just an extended version of the song? You know, with an extended instrumental part and intro and some extra choruses?

Absolutely. I have no idea why they stopped remixing the songs this way. The new "DJ style" remixes, where they take one or two obscure elements of a song and drown it in a bunch of boom-che-boom-che-boom-che is ridiculous. One of the reasons I enjoy being a Gary Numan fan. He still releases extended versions of his albums where every track is done the old 12" extended way. No major changes to the style.

I absolutely miss the old style remixes. It seems to me that most DJ mixes these days are ego-driven projects that perpetuate non-creativity & repeat the same old tricks over & over & over again. Listen to anything remixed by Thunderpuss, Junior Vasquez, and any of Arthur Baker's old stuff. It sounds exactly like the last thing they remixed.
It's a shame because Junior Vasquez did some good stuff early in his career. It seems like the past 8 years or so, he's been doing the same unlistenable, undanceable remix. I can tell you, having spent a lot of time in the clubs - people may assume those heavy effects, repeated percussion breaks, and endless samples of a vocal bit make for good dancing...they don't at all. It's boring & there's nothing worse than being being bored on the dancefloor.
I am much more interested in songs that are DJ produced & carry that DJ's name instead of an artist (or incorporates that DJ into the artist name) - like Matt Darey, DJ Tiesto or Ferry Corsten.
I also liked Hex Hector's stuff, although I haven't seen his name attached to anything in a long time.
I like a simple remix that stays true to the original song, doesn't add endless percussive breaks & may repeat a verse, or add one.
I also really dislike when there is a radio only remix. You buy the cd only to find the song you like is a sub-par mellow version or something.

Hey, aren't you that Numanoid guy in YouTube? (I could be wrong). If you are, I must commend you for your excellent video collection! I am particularly thankful of the "Payola$ - Eyes Of A Stranger" vid!
Back to the topic: I was never that fond of remixes/extended versions.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who's tired of the stupid remixes I see here and everywhere else. Sometimes songs are just fine the way they are. They don't need further modification. Think of a good song like a Honda CRX(stock). Don't put huge airdams & spoilers on it that ruin it.
What's sad is that many bad remixes of songs are much more available than the original.

I love remixes though I only realized this in recent months. I've been trying to snap up as many as possible by the bands I like. Some of them kind of ruin the song and get deleted. Others put a different twist on an old favorite and that's cool. And then some of them just make a song I love last just a little bit longer.

I get frustrated by remixes that are so far removed from the original that the only similarity they share is the name in the title. For example, the E Smooth Mix of the Pet Shop Boys song "Liberation" is a good song, but it has nothing to do with the original tune by PSB.
I do enjoy remixes that add to the orginal song -- one of my favorites is the Atlantic mix of Ocean Blue by ABC. There's some singing in the beginning and the end, but the middle is a nice long instrumental passage that fits very well within the structure of the original song.

Those are always the best, otherwise known as just the 12" extended version. Remixes sometimes work and sometimes don't. When they don't, they are awful. There was a period in the early 90's where dub mixes were very popular. Some of those dub mixes don't even sound like the original song. What's the use in that? [:)]

Yes, I miss them.
I'm sure Duran Duran were not the only ones who did this, but back when they created their 12" dance mixes (called "night versions"), they'd actually re-record a whole new version in the studio, before technology allowed many to remix/ extend songs via synth/ computer.

Remember album versions? These were 5-6min tracks cut down to make a 7" version. A good example of this is "Cry Boy Cry" by Blue Zoo.

12" singles were the best. One of my favorites was Uncertain Smile by The The. Very different from the piano laden version on the album (not that the album version was bad)

Hate to be the disenter in the group-BUT-nah--dont miss any remixes at all. A purist at heart I like 98% of the tunes the way they were originally meant to be heard.
No disrespect meant to Mr Jizzbomb.[:D]
