Well gang, here's the first taste of the results from the Ultimate Song Poll thread:

First some preliminaries:

- A whopping 66 of you participated in the thread. Amazing! Truly kudos to all. [8D]
- I took submissions from the old poll where people didn't resubmit to the new one, you know, stiffs like MikeP. [}:)]
- I tried to include all submissions despite many not meeting the format requests and resultantly being a giant pain in the ass.
- The only submissions that were deleted were ones that were not ranked, figuring that applying points to unranked lists unfairly skews the poll. Sorry.
- There were 3297 rows of songs imputed (some people missed a song or two), comprising 1755 distinct songs. Sheesh!
- Of these, only 296 songs were selected 3 or more times.
- An additional 249 songs were selected twice, leaving 1210 songs selected only once. Holy crap!
- If there are errors, please let me know. They most likely would be repeated songs arising from spelling errors (pivot tables don't pick these up and my poor eyes can take only so much proof reading).

The basic rankings will come first to be followed by correlation matrices later once I get a chance to digest.

THE NWO TOP 100:

These were scored as follows, however controversial the system may be:

- 7 pts to each top song
- 6 pts to songs 2-5
- 5 pts to songs 6-10
- 4 pts to songs 11-20
- 3 pts to songs 21-30
- 2 pts to songs 31-40
- 1 pt to songs 41-50

An additional factor of 0.1 pt was multiplied in (the Factor) for each time a song was voted upon, the rationale being that songs voted upon many times (the Count) would take tiebreakers from songs voted few times but in high positions. We don't negate favored songs (thus the larger point spread at the top) but we don't overly favor individual choices either. The decimals also avoid an over-large number of ties. Regardless, both the raw and factored totals are found below:

Love Will Tear Us Apart - is a full 320 points above the #2 song? HUH???!!!

I have never understood the appeal of that song. Especially NOT in those proportions. Amazing.

It has been suggested by a wise NW music connoiseur that 10 points be DEDUCTED for each time LWTUA is NOT on someone's list... I agree.

Well, before those charts, here's one more data view for those concerned with how the Factor weighting might skew the final results. You can see it doesn't impact most of the song positions, but there were some movers. Here's the top 100 songs ranked by how many positions they moved up or down (the Delta) as opposed to the Raw score. The higher the positive value, the more likely it was that more people ranked the song but not as highly across the board - a more broadly popular song. The higher the negative value, fewer people ranked it more highly - a less broadly popular song but one with strong feelings attached. The latter totally makes sense when you look at perenially under-appreciated bands like The Chameleons or a deeper cut like Transmission:
