I went with Modern English. [8D]

Midnight Oil would also be a good choice but they had more than one big hit(both Blue Sky Mine and Beds Are Burning were huge).

Q-Feel...with songs "Time Waits For No One" and "Heroes Never Die", I am surprised that "Dancing in Heaven" was the hit!

Another one not on your list is Fiction Factory...many other great songs other than "Feels Like Heaven".

I voted for A-Ha. They have tons of good stuff.

Didn't Dead or Alive have a 3-4 pretty big hits?

The only real top 40 hit in the states for DOA was "You Spin Me Round", I know "Brand New Lover" and "Something in My House" got some MTV play, but Ussually late at night if I remember correctly!!!!!!!!!

Dead or Alive had a few good songs which weren't singles. However, as their popularity increased, so did the suckiness factor in over-producing of their records. I think that My Heart Goes Bang was wonderful in it's original form, and then--voila--it's got guitar solos and cheap-sounding pinging syntesizers. The same holds true for the remainder of their singles from that point through the next album. Just atrocious.

I wonder, though, that if Dead or Alive had more success would the quality of their records have diminished quicker then (following the S/A/W formula)?

I'm not too familiar with the other bands' back catalogues. Though I can say that Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom was a fantastic album from beginning to end--both the US and the UK versions.

Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom, as in the album put out by the Tom Tom Club.

I am so amazed that Midnight Oil is on that list that I have decided not to vote at all [:0]

Another tough choice. I chose Modern English based solely on Life in the Gladhouse. I had to rule out Dexy's Midnight Runners because they had so many top 10 hits in England. Midnight Oil and Blancmange obviously had several songs with lots of airplay (Midnight Oil had lots of songs with regular airplay on mainstream stations). Dead or Alive had a couple too. I just can't put Murray Head or Scandal even in the category of new music, much less new wave. So....Modern English got my vote

You are mistaken. "Brand New Lover" peaked at #15 - all of 4 places lower on the Hot 100 than "Spin Me Round."

If we're talking one top 40 hit and nothing else anywhere near the charts, my pick is Face to Face. Granted, they only had 3 singles released in the U.S., with the second one being atrocious and the third receiving no label push whatsoever. It was pretty much inevitable. Although none of their albums are anywhere near consistent, there were at least a half dozen album tracks that could have been huge had anyone at Epic or Polygram bothered to listen.

And what on earth radio hit did Blancmange have in the States? They completely stiffed here!

Hard to go against Modern English from that list...the only other group perhaps deserving was Blancmange, but their musical style precluded hits.

Maybe I'm missing the point of the question here, but Blancmange, for example, had a bunch of "hits" in the UK. Sure, they should have been bigger in Canada, but how can you get airtime in between all that Parachute Club and Jane Siberry CanCon?

Blancmange had a half a dozen hits in the UK, but, obviously, grumpygirl has never set foot in England in her life. The inclusion of a-ha, Paul Young, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Kajagoogoo and Frankie Goes to Hollywood makes that abundantly clear. (Never mind that the first two had at least 2 Top 20 hits in the US, as well.) Granted, the selections are clueless no matter which country you're talking about. That's why I wrote in the ballot!

i guess this could be confusing to many because different countries had different charts.
here in oklahoma usa i barely heard any of this stuff on the radio or even mtv, but know that alot of these bands were far more successful in europe.

first off a-ha hunting high and low was one of my favorite albums of all time, its the album that got me into anything remotely new waveish.
i was totally a dorky kid listening to thriller still before i heard that.and take on me was the only hit here.but sadly i never cared that much for there other albums.

second too ry aye by dexys is another album i absolutely love, and though eileen was the only thing i ever heard by them get played i know they had been much bigger in the uk and even before that album were fairly successful.they had much more material i liked but not really any other albums i liked.

third youthquake by dead or alive is another album i loved all the way through and pete is probably one of my top 5 singers ever, love his voice.and again i didnt love any of there other albums as much as a whole.but i dod remember spin and brand new lover and heart goes bang all getting pretty good airplay here.

so i really cant pick between those 3.

but a few others that are among my favorites that i definately only remeber having one hit here were.
gary numan, he had like 3 masterpeices in a row and only cars seems to have gotten played.
wall of voodoo also had 3 great albums in a row and only mexican radio got played here.
men without hats also had 3 great albums in a row and only safety got played here, although pop goes the world from there fourth album did get a good amount of play as well, but you cant even tell thats the same band.
OMD had great stuf and i never heard them get played here until pretty in pink the film came out and if you leave got big but it was kind of too late by then.
the furs were the same they had alot of good stuff but i never heard them get played untill pretty in pink the film came out and they were kind of leaving there peak already.
missing persons i loved spring sessions m and the ep but only the song words got played here.
pseudo echo had the great autumnal park album but only had one hit here later on with there next album and that dumb cover of funky town.
