Astonishing. A Joy Division pilgrimage. What a sad, sad loss we have to bear after the sheer brilliance that was Joy Division. Can you imagine the discography they would have if Ian never passed and went on the US tour they were supposed to embark on the following day? Thank you for sharing these very special photos with us [|)]

Then we would never have had New Order. As cold as it sounds, I prefer the way things worked out.

It's not cold. I love New Order.
I just wish there was a way to bend matter and light and time so we could have both bands in existence!

I hear you. I'm not stating a preference one way or the other. And I've never understated my love of New Order. I just sometimes try to imagine a world with Ian Curtis and Joy Division still around. Towards their end, they were already beginning to use synthesizers and they most likely would have still been exposed to the New York dance culture that so inspired them when they came to over later that year as New Order. In fact, they wound up playing some of the very same clubs they had booked as Joy Division. I think JD would have wound up as some kind of amalgamation of itself and the New Order we know today. With Ian singing...wow, that would have been pretty spectacular.

Great photos.
Manchester is my home town and ive never been to strawberry studios etc.
Surprisingly it looks quite sunny in the pictures.
Ive had many a drink in the Briton's Protection pub over the last 20 years.
Did you know it used to be a recruiting place for sailors during the Napoleonic wars?
Recently its been under threat of being moved to make way for yet another plastic hotel.
Corporate greed may triumph over history and tradition.
Did you check ot Salford Lad's club. I was brought up in the same street. Not a very salubrious area but the people are the salt of the earth etc etc !

Hi Thanks for the compliments on the photos all, and glad you liked them! Yes it was very hot and sunny that week in August in England. It was right after the heatwave. That's terrible about Briton's Protection becoming a stupid hotel. I sensed the decades of history there. The same crap is happening here in NYC; all the historical places being bulldozed, unappreciated and made into condominums or new dormitory rooms for university students with money, very sad.
I did not get to go to Salford because of timing and because the friend I was with was a bit of a wet blanket and boring and not as big of a Smiths fan as I am. We tried to figure out the bus route to Salford on the map so we could go to the Salford Lads Club and then the Swan, where the band used to rehearse as Warsaw, upstairs. I think also Barney Sumner is from Salford? Anyway we still had fun and I will most likely be sent to DJ over in Manc at least once next year, if not more often, so on the other trips I'll make it a point to see all the things I missed last time. I also missed seeing the Apollo Theatre. I was not able to find Pennine Studios (????????) and I was not able to get to Cargo Studios in Rochdale due to time, and I was not able to find the Sunley Building in Piccadilly Plaza where Ian worked for Manpower Personnel. We found Manpower in Piccadilly but I doubt it was the same place where Ian worked in the late 70s although I found out the Sunley Bldg is still there somewhere.
Also the Russell Club in Moss Side where JD performed, is that still standing? We went thru Moss Side a few times anyway, it didn't scare me enough to not want to go see the Russell Club, it looked ok for us Brooklynites.
Those things I'll save for the next trips [8D]

Hi Cadman here you are!
As far as vacations go I'm trying to plan a trip to Thailand/Burma for summer 2007 right now! (and save up, lol)
As far as business travel goes I might have to go back to England as it looks now as the audience for my kind of music is more there and not so much here in the U.S.

Hi - I've been making posts on this forum with my events that come up but if you want to see my playlist I have it on my website:
www.myspace.com/shreddie
And when you go to my profile click on the top Blog that says "updates for events" and in that blog you will see a sample playlist. Of course I can't get away with all the obscure stuff if it is a dancefloor with a crowd that needs to hear more popular stuff to keep going, but it all depends on the night & how intelligent the crowd is, etc. Oct. 13 at Luke & Leroy I had a very cool crowd who danced to the likes of Blancmange/Living on the Ceiling; Depeche Mode/Newborn, etc. But Oct. 27 at Luke & Leroy the crowd needed to hear stuff like Eurythmics/Sweet Dreams; Billy Idol/Rebel Yell, etc. which made me miserable to say the least......at dance clubs you have to keep the crowd in to keep the manager happy so you have no choice sometimes but to play what the crowd needs to hear. And every night it's different so you can never tell what it's going to be like. But for the most part I try to start off to stick to a more creative set. It all depends.
I am going to do another XM radio program and on there I can be as obscure & strange as I want to, which is fun. The thing is I'm not really into the current EBM/goth/industrial thing which is what clubs here in the U.S. are about these days for the most part. I like only retro punk, post punk & new wave and the people in England know & love this music better so I keep getting offers there for work, especially the Manchester crowd, for example who the hell here in NY really wants to dance to A Certain Ratio, Joy Division, Section 25, Durutti Column all night - not many people.
I live right outside of Manhattan here but I grew up in New Jersey and Long Island (grade/high school in NJ, born on L.I.) so I moved to the city in '91 when I was 23.
