Fad Gadget

Well... life still holds surprises for those of us who like music very much and practically try to get stuff as much as they can.
Weirdly, I don't remember Fad Gadget ever being mentioned here... so that's maybe why it took so much time to discover it.
Yesterday, I found this really well-equiped record store in Buenos Aires and started looking at several new wave vinyls... The owner suddenly seemed very interested and started asking questions about which bands I liked. So then he says... listen to this... you will like it more than Depeche Mode (I don't know if I like it better but I do like it a lot! [:D]) and he started playing Collapsing New People.
God... I don't remember liking something so much since the first time that I've ever listened to JD's Transmission.

So... if anyone knows a good site with videos and stuff... I really would appreciate it.

Mmmm, Fad Gadget. One of my faves(I'll be one of the few to admit that I like a whole hell of a lot more than Depeche Mode). Einsturzende Neubauten add bits of clanging and scraping to "Collapsing New People"(which is more apparent on the 12" mix). Sadly, Frank Tovey(singer and mastermind behind Fad Gadget)passed away a few years ago...almost immediately after resurrecting the name/band.

Martin Gore has often cited Fad Gadget as an inspiration. Here's Collapsing New People performed live on German television in 1984:

<p align="justify">Earliest memory of Fad Gadget was "Coitus Interruptus" being used for a commercial in Latin America to sell an entertainment magazine[:D] They also used A-Ha's "Take On Me"[8D]

I remember hearing "Ricky's Hand" on KROQ all the time... went out and bought some of their 12" Singles, I know I have "Collapsing..."

I will repost the 12" single mp3s I have. I remember doing that back in late June or early July, I'll find the old NWO thread and post it underneath.

I'm glad the guy at the shop turned you on to them; especially since you like DM, JD, and New Order.

Fad Gadget's Fireside Favourites is absolutely one my most favorite albums ever ever ever. There are honestly only a few albums (even by artists I really love) that I can pop in the cd player and listen to over and over. I can't praise that album enough - it was my first exposure to Frank and even other Fad Gadget albums sort of pale in comparison to it in my opinion. I'm not really sure why, I know a lot of other people don't understand why I hold it in such high regard and prefer other Fad Gadget albums over Fireside Favourites, but I just think it's brilliant.

Sometime ago I researched on Fad Gadget to get a hard copy of my favorite songs since I only have a number of mp3's.
My favorite track is The Ring, I know that song is not that often mentioned but I don't particularly go for dance oriented tunes. Then I would cite Ideal World, Back to Nature, Ricky's Hand, Collapsing New People, The Box, Fireside Favourite, From Whom the Bells Toll, Ad Nauseam, I Discover Love, Coitus Interruptus, Lemming Stomp, Chasing the Blues Away, etc
Finally, in order to get all those songs , I settled for the albums Gag and The Singles.
It's a good band sometimes compared to DM or Peter Murphy but saying that they are better than DM is going a bit too far![:D]

... about 6 months ago there was a TV advert for a mobile operator called O2 in the UK (voiced by Sean Bean, the one with the electricity pylons in a desert at night and 'bubbles'!) whose theme music made heavy use of a sample of the wildlife noises off "Back To Nature"!

Wans't there some kind of Fad Gadget boxset released a few months back that encompassed Tovey's career? Can't say that I've listened to much of the Gadge', the Mode and Nitzer Ebb were more my bag from the old Mute label. Join in the chant!

Yeps there is the Frank Tovey [BOX SET] which includes demos and videos but the info is limited. I was not very sure to be able to play the videos and whether the original versions of the songs were included.
