New Wave Outpost Forum

Reading the post about Human League songs made me think about great "Non-Album" singles. I'm talking about songs which were not released on a traditional LP/CD (not including compilation "new singles" or soundtrack songs). What are some of the best. Some of my favorites (both new wave and beyond) include:

The Way You Are - Tears For Fears
Fascination - Human League
Mirror Man - Human League
Asleep In The Back - Elbow
Going Out - Supergrass
11 O'Clock Tick Tock - U2
A Celebration - U2

Blue Monday-New Order (NOT on PC & L original release)

Schwenko, you're so not shocking me!

I'll go with Transmission, LWTUA, Atmosphere and Dead Souls by...um...uh...dang, what is that band's name again?!

Sorry, but I misread the question; "what are some..." is plural, n'est-ce pas?

Ceremony-New Order

I won't include the fantastic singles from the EP 1981-FEP 313-1982
(such as Everything's Gone Green, Temptation)

Confusion-New Order
Shellshock-New Order
True Faith-New Order

(won't include State of the Nation-New Order)

truly a fantastic singles band, deshooka!!

...but Schwenko, where's Thieves Like Us?!!?

*aforementioned THIEVES (New Order)
*CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES (Cure)
*WILLIAM, IT WAS REALLY NOTHING (Smiths))
*THE LAST OF THE FAMOUR INT'L PLAYBOYS (Moz)
*EUROPEAN SON (Japan)
*NOTHING IN COMMON (Thompson Twins)

----Len (hey Schwenko, it's me! Viva Spoons!)

Hi Len-long time!

I didn't include Thieves Like Us because the request was for GOOD non-album singles [8D]

A Celebration - U2
Another Day - U2
The Way You are - Tears for Fears.

I liked the b-side: (The) Marauders

-"Bamboo Houses/ Bamboo Music" -Sylvian/Sakamoto
-"Love Will Tear Us Apart" -Joy Division
-"Tour De France" -Kraftwerk
-"Arc Lite" -Loop
-"my spine is the bassline" -shriekback (did not appear on UK release)
-"Ghost Town" -The Specials
-"Pop Song" -David Sylvian
-"Scream Down At Me" -China Crisis
-"Birds Of A Feather" -Killing Joke
-"Glow" -Spandau Ballet

"Going Underground" - The Jam
"Funeral Pyre" - The Jam
"To Hell With Poverty" - The Gang of Four
"Me or You" - Killing Joke
"Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part III" by Ian Dury & the Blockheads
(just to name some that haven't been mentioned already)

According to the liner notes on his recent re-issues, Ian Dury disliked having his A-side singles on the album. He felt all the great hitmakers, such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles, didn't need to put their singles on their albums, so neither did he (not until the "Laughter" album, anyway).

"Its All The Rage" -Boomtown Rats
"The Producer"- Gang of 4
"Landlord"- The Police
"Night Rally"- Elvis Costello & The Attractions
"Live It Up" -Blondie
"Beat My Guest" - Adam & The Ants

To name a few...

Toyah Wilcox - Bird in Flight, Tribal Look from the 4 from Toyah EP.
But, Thunder in the Mountains is one of her best songs & I don't think it made it on to an official album until the hits packages.

Blondie - Poet's Problem, Scenery

So it has to be a non-album single, and not a b-side or EP track?

"Blue Diamond" by H2O fits that bill. It's a good tune too.

The Wild Swans

1. God Forbid
2. A Word Of Milk And Blood
3. No Bleeding
