Has anyone tried any of these discs? There are a few New Wave songs like Forever Young and Only You strewn in among them.

I need to listen to this music again. I didn't love it back when.
I would love to read someone's opinion of these discs and get some recommendations on where to start exploring.

GREAT ALBUM!! When I saw the tracklist of the CD, I immediately listened to it at TOWER RECORDS LISTENING BOOTH then bought the album right away. Cool ambience.

Okay, I gave it a try and I must say, YUCK. What a horrible way to massacre perfectly good songs, along with some songs that weren't good in the first place.

The one thing about Gregorian chant to me is that I find it instantaneously reverential, steeped in solemn tradition and superbly uplifting whilst being so very life and spiritual affirming. I have a great double disc set of Greg. Chant which I put on from time to time. So when I heard the Only You cover yesterday for the first time, my curiosity was instantly piqued. Greg. Chant versions of New Wave? I'm all over this kind of avant garde jive. It just gets no more random and "shocking" than that, lol - so punk / new wave [:D]

I have all of the Masters of Chant discs, and I think they are phenomenal. However, some songs work better than others. It's eerie to hear "Blasphemous Rumours" in a sacred setting; kind of like Jerry Goldsmith's Omen theme, "Ave Satani"; which this group covered on Volume 5!!! I did love "Only You" and "Save A Prayer" and "Fade To Grey" too. On their latest, they do a bang up job of Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" which is incredible too!!!
What I love most of all about this project, is that the original collaborator on Enigma's first album, is the producer on this project. You know it's going to be high quality then!!!

I have all the albums too and I agree with Jeffrey that they are phenomenal and there are stand out tracks. The Gregorian Chants work on some songs and not on others. I especially like the ones with the female vocals. Most the vocals are Sarah Brightman as this is a Frank Peterson project. You won't see her listed on there though because I don't think she can use the Sarah Brightman name on it. It's definitely her though. Also, before the Master of Chant series, Gregorian released an album called Sadisfaction which is flat out beautiful. One of my favorite albums of all time. Vocals were by the beautiful Sisters of Oz.

Is that the same Gregorian which did Once in a Lifetime? There are no similarities in the sound.

Those English lyrics in Blasphemous Rumours really crack me up. Couldn't they translate it to Latin?[:D]
But others like Maid of Orleans and Hide And Seek work quite well I think, since the originals sound a bit like hymns anyway.

Yeah, I knew there was an Enigma connection in there somewhere whom I love. I think I remember a thread not too long ago entitled Chant or Chant / Club.....something like that - was it related to all this we're talking about here?
I think you definitely need to have an appreciation for novelty in order to "get" this. But it's not just about that. The first Enigma album just blew people away by combining Greg. chant with House type beats. Maybe doing the covers of New Wave classics was just another way to use Greg. chant in another very surprising way.
I try to be open to new interpretations of New Wave I guess because I've been hearing the same things for the past twenty years and it does tend to get a bit dull. But I'm the kind of person who needs to find "the new". Plus, I consider it pretty cool that someone who was involved with Enigma is such a NW fan. It only demonstrates how wide the influence of this genre is. Musical cross pollination opens the opportunity for music to become a means of social progress and that is uber-groovy.

Once In A Lifetime is on the Sadisfaction album and yes this is the same Gregorian. Gregorian is basically Frank Peterson, who is also the keyboardist for Sandra when you watch her videos. Gregorian came out of the first Enigma line up with consisted of Michael Cretu & Frank Peterson. (Curly MC & F. Gregorian aka Curly Michael Cretu and Frank (Gregorian) Peterson). The Sadifaction album has one song that sounds like Enigma and that's "So Sad", which is in incredible song. Anyways, the album didn't do too well so the original Gregorian concept was scratched. The new Gregorian concept of singing cover songs is selling pretty well so they've released 5 albums already, all pretty good. The first 3 are my favorites. You can get the Best of Gregorian and have a little flavor of each. By the way, Once In A Lifetime is one of my all time favorite songs.
