As you know, I always co-host "A Very 80's Christmas" on Long Island radio every year (I'll post more on that when the time comes). The format of the show is only songs released or recorded between January 1st, 1980 and December 31st 1989. (Luckily, the Bowie/Bing duet was not "officially" released until '82)

I know that The Alarm's "Happy Xmas" was released in 1990, but does anyone know if it was recorded in 1989?

Thanks.

XTC's (aka "Three Wise Men") "Thanks for Christmas"
and the Pogues "Fairytale of New York" (featuring the late great Kirsty MacColl spitting out some spicey couplets) are my two all time faves.

I wish I could post it but one of my favorites is R-E-M's version of "Toyland."

I can't post it because I don't have it.

You thought of the best one first, in my opinion. I have also always considered Do they Know Its Christmas to be sort of new wave Christmas song because of all the nw artists in it, and the fact that Midge Ure and Bob Geldof wrote and produced it!

I sent my Alarm question to the band's MySpace page and got this response:

Hi there, so sorry for the delay.
Interesting story here, was originally recorded on July 31st, 1990 with the band and the Welsh Morpheus Choir as an Alarm Christmas single in 1990.

However despite the single actually being pressed, it was withdrawn due to the suggestion of the record company due to the Gulf War beginning and was speculated that it would not be played by either British or American radio.

It has subsequently appeared on The "Standards" album, The Alarm box set and quite a few 80's compilations.
Please see link at:

Hope that helps. We've actually just put up Mike's solo version on our myspace player last night.
Thanks again and wishing you a lovely Holiday.
All the best,
Lily-MPO Team

Hello.

Could you tell me the approximate date and year when you recorded "Happy XMas (War is Over)?"

Thanks!
