Heard this English Beat song ("Sole Salvation") on the radio the other day- it sounded so good! I had actually completely forgotten about this song so it was a cool surprise.

Thank god for Indie 103 fm. Listen online at http://www.indie1031.com/

Sole Salvation was always one of my favorite Beat tunes, but I don't think it was ever a single ("I Confess" and "Save It For Later" were also on theat amazing "Special Beat Service" album).

I remember Dave Wakeling once saying in an interview that he was a competitive swimmer as a teenager, so he had the breath to get through the impressive rapid-fire lyrics of "Salvation."

My favorite memory attached to this song:

When I was in college, I was the one who always had a new record (or records) in my hand. One day, one of our friends comes barging into our apartment, a la Dr. Bellows from "I Dream Jeannie". Out of breath, he just asks me "Do you have the new English Beat album?" (meaning "English Beat Service", in this case). I told him "no, not yet", to which he replied, "what do you mean, no??? I HAVE to hear Sole Salvation!!!!!" I told him I had that song on a single, and he asked if he could listen to it. I said, "Sure, it's in my room." So he goes into my room, shuts the door behind him, puts on the song at top volume, and we (me and two of my roommates) hear a lot of banging and knocking going on in my room. When the song is over, our friend comes out, shirt disheveled, sweating, panting, "Thanks, I really needed to hear that!" and left as quickly as he got there. We surmised he was dancing up a storm while listening to it, and just smirked about the whole thing afterwards.

Sole Salvation was a very popular song among my crowd; I'm surprised it was relegated to a b-side on that particular single.

Very cool Craig. I hadn't thought of Sole Salvation in such a long time.

I used to only like live renditions of bands that I'd seen. Now, I'm digging 'em more and more - basically craving any reinterpretation of good music. It's sometimes crap, sometimes really good like these...

Ring of Fire - Blondie
Back in Flesh - Wall of Voodoo
Smash It Up - The Damned (always love the guitar prelude)
Crocodiles - Echo & the Bunnymen (anything by them really)
Love Will Tear Us Apart - The Cure
Transmission - New Order
New Dawn Fades - Joy Division (most any live version is better than the studio mix)
What We All Want - Gang of Four (super meaty)
English Rose - Paul Weller
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - Morrissey
How Long Will It Take - Plimsouls
I Got You - Crowded House
