You know that moment when someone takes it too far. Yeah, you thought you had an open mind but then...well, THAT'S crossing the line!

Who has pushed you past your comfort zone?

I don't know of too many extreme performers first hand, but accounts of early Throbbing Gristle having group anal sex on stage seems a bit different than the usual drum, bass and axe schtick.

I know I posted it as an answer to "worst opening act" before, but it bears repeating:

In 1986, I saw New Order doing a benefit show at 1018, a club on the west side of NYC (10th and 18th to be exact). We got there early, and were three people back from the front of the stage. First act was "Certain General" and they were fine.

Then came performance artist Karen Finley. She starts screeching some song about being raped when she was a kid. My girlfriend starts to squirm. Finley whips off her halter top and starts "frenching" the mic stand. Girlfriend turns and wants to leave. She then pulls out a bucket of what I HOPE was chocolate (or brown food colored-liquid) and starts slathering it all over herself (and splattering the crowd).

It was all I could do to keep the girlfriend in place, telling her "we're going to be just 10 feet from New Order, baby! I never had to use the line "just avert your eyes and hold your ears" as advice at a concert before!

Being 10 feet from New Order at their height WAS spectacular, but I definitely could have passed on Karen Finley's attempts to be "extreme!"

I'm reminded of a pic someone posted once of Pete Burns wearing a skirt with no underwear and having just taken a dump on stage.

That's pretty extreme... It's also one of those pictures I knew I shouldn't look at because it would be burned into my head, never to be forgotten!

Honestly though, I always thought Iggy Pop & Sid Vicious were pretty extreme with all the cutting & bleeding on stage.

I'll agree with very early Throbbing Gristle together with the wild stage show of Gavin Friday and Virgin Prunes.

The most extreme I'd seen myself was The Cramps onstage. Compared to the above sightings, though, they were tame !

GG Allin. I was hanging out with him and he snuck me into his show here in Minneapolis in 1987. I don't care what anyone else says, if you've never seen footage of a GG show then you haven't seen an "extreme" performer!

Definitely GG. I will never again be able to look at a turkey baster without shuddering. [:D]

Is there even a question!??! GG Allin....I haven't had a banana since seeing him.

Another act that comes close....the local club started having a band night. This is a club that normally had KLOS type music ie: Led Zep, Journey cover bands

I was looking through an L.A. Weekly and saw they had listed The Mentors. I think to myself, "it CAN'T be THOSE Mentors, can it?"

It was.

I don't what was funnier the band or the look on the owner and bartenders faces!!

I'm really tempted to go to youtube & look up gg alin. I barely remember him from back then -except his planned suicide.

Something tells me not to go there though!
