True Songs about Lust, Sexuality, Gender?
Ok, I don't mean to weird anyone out here. I was just thinking that, although romantic love is basically the dominant subject of pop music, and lust is certainly alluded to, I can think of precious few songs that address the topic in any sort of true or direct way.
Suggestions welcome.
My thoughts:
Morrissey's lyrics: At time indirect, but poignant imagery and clever wordplay. The early homoerotic lyrics that raised eyebrows in the press are particularly vivid: 'And when we're in your scholarly room/Who will swallow whom ?', from Handsome Devil; 'Slap me on the patio/I'll take it now' from Reel Around the Fountain.
I'm particularly interested in songs that take on sexuality from the female perspective. Romeo Void is a great example; Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing) actually addresses the element of fear: 'There's a time when every girl learns, stay away/And a time to walk round the long way'.
Berlin Sex. The title inevitably places this in novelty territory, but these are enormously powerful lyrics about role-playing. It probably took Lovage's simmering cover version to reveal this to me (If you don't have the track, definitely seek it out!).
Thanks for reading my ribald topic.
