what's your meaning of NEW WAVE/NEW MUSIC ????

it would be interesting to hear everybody's opinion on how they interpret....NEW WAVE.
where do we start, its such a big umbrella.
i guess we should start when rock started,,the early 1950's.
let's not forget about groups/artists like,,bill haley & his comets/ricky nelson/elvis/everly brothers/little richard/eddie cochran...50's r&b,50's gospel-church music,50's blues,50's country.
then it evolved to the artists/groups of the 1960's who were influenced by the 1950's.
and the ball kept rolling thru the 1970's who were influenced by both of those genre's,which brings us to::::NEW WAVE/PUNK/POWER POP.
let's not forget that new wave etc...had it's beginings (according to the music critics etc...like ira robbins) in the early 1970's,probaly around 1973.(new york dolls, tubes, dmz)
so,you have to realize that new wave etc...has been around since then and not the 1980's.
under the umbrella of....THE NEW MUSIC,,,you have punk/power pop/new romantics/ska/electronic/new wave etc.....
so who's to say that power pop is not new wave,or ska etc....it really comes down to one's own individual opinion.
a group or artist that you may consider new wave, the person next to you may not and vice versa.
so it's probaly unfair to critize someone's choice on what they consider...NEW WAVE.
think of it this way,THE ROMANTICS,THE SHOES,20/20,THE RECORDS,PEZBAND,THE BABYS,THE PLIMSOULS,THE CRETONES,GREAT BUILDINGS,,etc..are all considered power pop. does that make them less new wave???????
THE ENGLISH BEAT,MADNESS,THE SPECIALS,BAD MANNERS etc...are all considered ska.does that make them less new wave??????
THE JAM,MERTON PARKAS,THE CHORDS etc...are all considered mod.does that make them less new wave????
NEW MUSIK,KRAFTWERK,JAPAN,ULTRAVOX,JOHN FOXX,GARY NUMAN,OMD,DEPECHE MODE etc..are all considered electronic/synth pop.does that makes them less new wave?????
you see where i'm going ?
NEW WAVE/NEW MUSIC is such a big umbrella that all the bands/artists and genre's of new wave should be accepted, not ignored or ridiculed etc...
also the artists who werent new wave etc...& released a new wave type of album or song, give them credit to try something new & explore their craft....
this was my opinion...............

I respect your opinion Georgie.

But New Wave for me shouldnt be defined as we will have a million definitions of it and in the end, we will still never agree to each other. New Wave music just come along to a person. He will be influenced by the music he had grown up to and the styles and culture he grown up too. Its like a calling. But obviously, some bands, even they have 1 or 2 songs with NW influences couldnt be considered Nw. NW is an attitude. If i will embrace your opinion, even Michael Jackson is NW.

NW has many sub genre. Kraftwerk is NW but is very different from The Cure. Gary Numan is NW but hes differet from The Clash. Or Joy Division. I know NW depends on the person but you have to go with the majority here. If 90% here doesnt agree your bands arent NW, then maybe they are not NW.

Can you compare Ricky Nelson to..lets say Robert Smith? or Marc Almond? Theres the big difference.

This is also my opinion.

How do you expect anybody to read that? Your writing style is a mess. I think many of us would rather not debate the origins of new wave music which would give you some sort of opportunity to make hundreds of new threads from artists from the 1950s. Please don't dilute the forums further and do that.

I think you should find a different forum to discuss music on.

And dont rely too much on your sources. Its just their own interpretation/opinion.

For starters, Defining song-genres has always led to numerous debates. Can an artist who's not new wave make a new wave song? I mean, Robert Palmer is certainly not a new wave artist, but Looking For Clues is definitely a new wave song. What about The Clash? Sure, they're punk, but songs like Train In Vain have a new wave feel to them. Hell, Lost In A Supermarket and Wrong 'Em Boyo or as ska as The English Beat.
I always tried to avoid labelling artists. Someone is bound to dissagree with you, and, shockingly, some even get upset about it.

Anyway, as far as your posts go, Georgie....although some of them seem to ramble on a bit and seem a tad disjointed, they always seem to get quite a few responses, some legit and some just people who enjoy flaming you, but that beats checking in and seeing that there are only three new posts since the day before.

Keep 'em coming.

Personally it's anything from the really early eighties that has synths and traditional instruments alongside, with the synths being more pronounced. Stuff like A Flock of Seagulls, Devo, Altered Images and even Bow Wow Wow. It ends around 83/84 for me,where it became synthpop.

If this post contained a single coherent thought, one might feel inclined to respond to it, or enter into debate as to its merits. As it is, it looks suspiciously like an attempt to lend validity to the steaming piles you've left all over this board. This post can only serve as a poor attempt to explain away the inappropriateness of most of your other posts.

You're far too stupid to be smart.

As homework, I'm assigning to you:

In one hundred words or less, explain the undeniable effect Mel Torme had on the direction of New Wave music. Please cut and paste knowledge gleaned from Wikipedia, or better still, retype it and introduce your own special brand of spelling to the text. Proper sentence/paragraph structure will be penalized.

I'm starting to think Georgie Rockwood is the Sanjaya of the NWO....

OK...everyone should adopt my broad brush approach to New Wave...I'll make it real simple....

New Wave started with The Velvet Underground and ended with Detroit House....
