The Saints-(I'm )Stranded

Postby schwenko » Sun Jun 10, 2007 10:38 am

I can't say that I am even slightly familiar with Aussie punk, although I do recognize a few of the names (Radio Birdman, The Scientists, The Saints e.g.).
I was running in a 5K race in Queens this am, when I realized that this song was on constant play in my mind. Very good for driving, rhythmic motion/exercise! Sounds like early Ramones, or even The Damned (think "New Rose") to me. The song was on a recent compilation cd I bought:

And from the liner notes of another compilation, "Tales from The Australian Underground-Singles 1976-1989"

"When the Ramones' debut album was released in April 1976, The Saints' guitarist, Ed Kuepper was stunned. He couldn't fathom how the New Yorkers had been able to somehow "rip off" his band from the other side of the planet! The single "(I'm) Stranded" (October 1976)was The Saints' first release and they chose to release it on their own Fatal Records label, a do-it yourself idea that sprung to Kuepper's mind when he was working in the Brisbane distribution office of Astor Records. Gushing overseas reviews, including Sounds magazine's "Single of this and every week", led to an album deal with EMI UK, and the band relocated to England soon after."
