OK people, the aliens are landing soon (friendly ones) and you have been charged with the task of giving them 10 New Wave songs to take back to their planet to help their fellow beings understand the New Wave sound of the late 70s and early 80s on planet Earth.

These are not necessarily your favorite songs but are the best representations of the overall sound. Due to interference from a black hole the aliens have not gotten any Earth radio waves past 1975. They currently wear lots of polyester leisure suits love The Carpenters. Can you help them?

PS "Doot Doot" is a terrible curse word in their language so please do not include it here.

A great new waver once said "If the list is missing such New Wave stalwarts/ground breakers like The Cars, U2, The Clash, Pretenders, R.E.M., B-52s, etc. can it truly be reflective of the ultimate...? I say nay."

FAIL...well, you got the Cars but something tells me you only substituted them since you weren't allowed to use Doot Doot.

That was referring to a list of the Top 50. With only 10, something has to be left out but for my own Top Ten list I will stick with The Clash, Blondie, The Cars, B-52s, U2, Pretenders, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Smiths, The Police and The Cure.

OK so I cheated and picked 11. Still didn't have room for contenders like Billy Idol, REM, Depeche, Talking Heads, Soft Cell, Siouxie, Duran Duran, Missing Persons, Go Gos, Berlin, Ramones and Flock Of Seagulls. Now I just need to narrow it down to specific songs.

I'll try to give this a go--even though I'm sure I'm opening myself up to ridicule (even more than is average for me).

I thought about this and decided to use the umbrella definition of NW--then some of the subgenres (some generally agreed upon, others less so) under that umbrella and a representative example from each. Hopefully after hearing these the aliens will forego the anal probe--on me anyway.

I didn't rank these and like you Craig I cheated a bit and went with 15 songs (sorry)
