The suit, filed in Illinois, aims to put an end to the former House Speaker's habit of using the song as entrance music for his campaign stop appearances.

How come it seems that only republicans get sued for use of songs and not democrats? Is it because the democrat politicians always ask for permission to use the songs first or because most bands are liberal so they don't mind democrats using their songs?

It is that most bands are liberal, undoubtedly. I don't know if Survivor are entitled to sue successfully however, assuming the Gingrich campaign asked the record company if they could use the song. If so, the band has the right to request that it not be used, but to sue??? not really. Should Tom Cruise sue somebody who uses a clip from one of the movies he has starred in? No. The company with the rights to the movie can, but not Tom Cruise. This is how I understand this. I don't think Survivor has much of a case here, nor do I know why bands even care. If I go to a Gingrich Q&A and they play 'Eye of The Tiger', my first thought isn't "Survivor support Gingrich!". That's just retarded. Live and let live.(I will say, however, that Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like The Wolf' would make for a better Gingrich theme song, and what's more, Duran Duran would be less likely to care. 'Probably cheaper too)

I read they also threatened to sue CBS for using the name "Survivor" as the title of their reality show...that was some years back

Being a one hit wonder in the 80's, I'm sure they've run out of money by now. I guess singing the background music for "Real Men of Genius" isn't making them enough money, or at least the lead singer.
