I've found literally hundreds of songs/groups here that prior to joining NWO I knew nothing about. Of all those songs/groups, my one favorite has to be the "Square Dance" lp by Food and Shelter.

Quirky, and somewhat experimental in spots, it still manages to have 4 excellent songs on it

What's yours?

For me it wasn't anything too exotic - The Sound. I'd definitely heard a few songs, but they didn't really penetrate my consciousness. I've been very surprised at the extent and quality of their catalog.

I'm sure there's tons of stuff I've forgotten about. Another one that stands out for some reason is Zaine Griff. It's not a favorite per se, but it was totally new to me and pretty darn good quality. There's lot of stuff that's been new to me, but honestly, there's been plenty of bad with the good (probably why it was obscure to being with).

Thomas Leer and Robert Rental - "Monochrome Days". I had no idea it existed and now it's one of my favorite songs. I couldn't tell you who posted it though.

Oh ... and "Violins".

Dammit, that's like asking how many grains of sand there are on a beach!

So many over the years, the one that immediately springs to mind is 'Dancing Shoes (extended version)' by Seiko Matsuda by Banana-something, can't remember the rest of their username.

And 'Violins' of course.

Not sure I have one favorite but I have snagged quite a few sonic goodies from the Obscure 80s Central thread including some remixes I never knew existed!

This. Although If I had to pick one band that has been consistently in my top 10 since I really "discovered" them on the NWO is The Chameleons

If I had to pick one band I'd go with Polyrock. Honorable mentions: Fay Ray, John Foxx, Paul Collins Beat, Sad Lovers & Giants, Wild Swans and The Lucy Show.

Not sure who first brought it up, but coming across the Rescue's "Tell Me Now" really stands out as one of those 'wow' moments.

What struck me when i first discovered this site (LONG time ago)was how different Mike P's version of new wave was than mine. Many of the bands on his 'sampling the rarities' section were new to me (Trees, the Expression, the Thought)....he focused on lots of major-label one-offs. I had concentrated more in the UK post-punk vein.
Being a vinyl freak, I eventually tracked all his recommendations down in the used bins (many at $1). It was fun to have some new (old) stuff to discover.

Nice thread, eight6. Sometimes the best ideas are the most obvious?

The Mood, Trees, Iam Siam, The Expression, Secession, Fay Ray, Six Sed Red, Space Monkey, and, of course, whoever sang 'Stay (The Second Time Around)'.

Not so much discoveries, but this board/site also helped me take a lot of new wave bands who I'd written off as dated poseurs more seriously-Pseudo Echo, Real Life, and Simple Minds among them.

the sound are my number 1 favorite band. for me its also nothing overly obscure, its A DROP IN THE GRAY. through the entire 90s i saw that record at every record convention i went to and thought about trying it so many times because i sort of liked the cover, then i finally heard a few songs here and i love it.
