My 80s record collection

I bought my first album (by a local hard rock band called La Trampa) when I was 14 but I really started buying albums the following year when I bought Riot Act by Pearl Jam. I became such a big fan of the band that I ended up buying all their albums. In the following years I bought albums by Nirvana, No Doubt, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Green Day.
But then in 2008 I discovered a free dowloading site called Ares. At first, I dowloaded songs by Pearl Jam and No Doubt and other 90s acts.
But about 2 months later I discovered 80s music. The first songs I dowloaded were by Madness, Madonna and Blondie and I put them into a CD making a sort of "best of the 80s" album. In the following 4 years I made 25 of them, mixing songs by artists of different generes.
But I always wanted to have orginal CDs. So one day last January I was at a record shop and came across several albums by bands (Pet Shop Boys, New Order) I was into. After spending a few minutes deciding which New Order I was going to buy, I chose International.
Less than 2 weeks later I bought Celebration (the 2 CD deluxe edition, which was a bargain) by Madonna just because I wanted to have all of their hits in just one CD with good sound quality. .
Then in March I bought Greatest Hits by Blondie as I was/am very fond of thier singles (I think they are one of the greatest singles bands ever) which I already had on mp3, of course.
Then a few months later I bought Waiting For The Sirens Call by New Order, which I had been wanting to buy for a long time even when I didn't know any of the songs on it. I really liked it at first and I still do but I don't listen to it that much now (I've been listening to International more instead).
My next purchase was PopArt by the Pet Shop Boys, which is a killer greatest hits album and which I listened to it a lot in the month following its purchase.
The last album I bought was the debut album by Madonna (which I had on mp3) which I bought (because it was a bargain) and which I haven't listened to that much.
Well, I know that most of these albums weren't relesed in the 80s but most of the songs on them were.
The reason behind these purcahses was having all the songs of a particular artist on just one CD with good sound quality whenever I wanted to hear it. My intention is to keep adding original 80s albums to my colection. I'm just starting.

That's a good start. But no 80s collection can truly be complete until "Doot Doot" by Freur has been added.

I highly recommend [b]The Other Ones[/b] self-titled album from 1986. It's a [i]really[/i] strong New Wave pop album that can please non-music-nerds.

I don't know what kind of prices are cheap for you, but I often get stuff from http://www.cdwow.us , since it is free shipping, and every few months, they offer 15% off everything. I would often buy used, too, although local stores that sell used CDs have dried up. Amazon marketplace is a good place to find cheap stuff.

Funny, I just bought New Order ... Siren's Call recently, since they were clearing it out at a local store, but haven't listened to it yet. I'm in no hurry. Their older stuff was their best. Technique seems to be the one a lot of people choose as their favourite, but Low-Life gets a lot of votes too.

As for Madonna, her first two albums are good, as is Frozen. Pet Shop Boys ... first album, Introspective, and Very are my picks. Be sure to get the two-disc editions, as these are very well done (booklet with lots of info + good extra tracks).

Regarding the music, tell me a bit more about it. Which bands are they similar to?

Thanks for your recommendation but I can't buy from those sites as I don't have an international credit card.
New Wave albums are hard to find in most record stores here in Uruguay but there's a small one which sells a lot of 80s stuff. I just visited it once about 6 months ago and I didn't buy anything because I couldn't find what I was looking for at the moment. But I should go there again I think, because they might have new 80s albums now.

I bought Siren's Call about 4 months ago and it costed me about $9 (is that cheap for you?). I really liked most of the songs in it at first and I still do but I don't listen to it that that much now (I tend to listen to greatest hits albums more).
I ripped all the songs on Low-Life and put it on a CD about a month ago and listened to it just once. I never felt like listening to it in these past few weeks. I think it's a bit too dark for my tastes but maybe I should listen to it again as it might grow on me.

I've heard all of the 80s Madonna albums and all of them are good but my favourite is True Blue.
Well, I haven't listened to any Pet Shop Boys album other than PopArt but I think I'm going to download the 80s albums (as they aren't available on record stores here on Uruguay) vey soon as I'm very curious about it.

$10 is a pretty good price.

CDWow takes PayPal, and I don't think you need an international CC for PayPal, but I'm not sure. CDWow's US website may not ship to yoru country, so use http://www.cdwow.com

And if you don't like dark, then Pet Shop Boys' first album may not be for you. I think you're right that Low-Life is a bit dark. Technique is not, though.

I never knew the Pet Shop Boys could be "dark". Sad (Rent, Being Boring) maybe, but not dark. OK, I haven't listened to that album yet so I can't comment but you might be right.
I know 5 songs form Technique. They are: Fine Time (which I dowloaded and then deleted from my ipod as I didn't like it), All the Way, Love Less, Round and Round and Run. I really dig all these last 4 songs but my favourite one is All the Way (It's such an uplifting song). Yeah, I agree, they aren't dark at all. OK I haven't heard the rest of the album yet but I trust you.

Listen to West End Girls. It has kind of a dark/gloomy sound to it. Maybe it's just me, but when listening to the album, as opposed to the singles from the album, there's a kind of gloom in the production.

Yeah, Fine Time isn't one of New Order's finer singles .

I forgot to mention to look for those album boxsets that come in the cardboard vinyl-replica style cases, as those work out to about $6 an album.

The common complaint about these boxsets is that they don't come with booklets, but for the price, it's still a good deal. And sometimes, they include the original CD release, although there are remastered versions available, but if you're looking to get into a band, this is a good way to do it.

I looked trough the CDWow site and I didn't find that many 80s New Wave/Alternative albums, which is what I'm looking for. Are you sure this site is the best place to start? Plus, I'm sure I need an international credit card to buy from there. Thanks for posting the links, anyway.
