New Wave Outpost Forum

There is a ton of talk, press and even a tour of the Big 4 of Thrash metal: Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. Who would be the Big 4 of new wave and who would make a tour worth going to?

My pick is:
Duran Duran
The Cars
Gary Numan
Flock of Seagulls.

Not based on favorites but mass appeal and image of "new wave". The latter is where The Cars would get dinged just a bit. I don't think Numan and AFOS are close in the volume of output or recognition.

I'd remove The Cure from Frau's list and replace them with Simple Minds.

Certainly brings up what "new wave" is, eh?

If it was a tour promoting the biggest influences on New Wave, I'd have to agree. [;)]

In all seriousness this is a difficult topic.

What might be a big band in one country may be a minor one in another. For example The Cars were huge in the US but best known in the UK for 'Drive'. Another example is Madness. Huge in the UK but best known in the US for 'Our House'.

So that leaves us with the choices that had more than a fleeting presence in another country. This is the best with which that I could come up:

Duran Duran
Human League
B-52s
Blondie

i think that this can divided up into the following

late 70's new wave:

The Cars
Blondie
The Police
Talking Heads

early 80's new wave

Duran Duran
Psychedelic Furs
Echo and the Bunnymen
Simple Minds

mid 80's

The Big Four would have to, by definition, be BIG. Love Numan but he's a one hit wonder who's time in the spotlight you may have missed if you blinked. If New Wave were sports he'd be bowling. Or maybe bocce.

I believe the criteria was BEING KNOWN by more than one person, for more than ONE hit. In this case, you might be thinking of:
