Riverman, don't expect everyone here to agree with you on
the bands you hold so dear.
Alan Myers was such an incredible drummer, in one of the
most different bands in the world. Devo was the "Kiss" of
New Wave. Like Kiss, they were never taken seriously (still
not in the rock & roll hall of fame, but these assholes all
are: grandmaster flash and the furious five, run–d.m.c.,
beastie boys, red hot chili peppers & public enemy.) Their
only real recognition other than "Whip It" was that 1997
Lollapalooza tour where they "headlined" and all the bands
(Prodigy, Tool, Korn & Porno) were saying what an influence
they were. When Devo finished the night with their set, all
the fans of the other groups were all heading out to the
parking lot and only the true Devo fans waited and sat
through all the other mishmash of music were rewarded.
Devo moved on without Alan, but he's always there every
time you listen to Satisfaction, Blockhead, Freedom Of Choice,
Through Being Cool, Peek-A-Boo and Here To Go.
One last note. Although almost everyone on these boards
feels strongly about the suicide of a certain lead singer
in a band from the late 70's, the potential music that he
never made and the strong force the band that the remaining
members became throughout the 80's, Alan Myers is just a
footnote. I'll be the only one here who will care when Lene
Lovich, or similar forgotten artists pass on years from now.
It's not important that we post on the passing of these
musicians whom we all adore. What is important that we will
always have the music they created and left behind for future
generations to enjoy. All are just as important and all deserve
the same respect and recognition (as long as they are not in
the phony baloney rock & roll hall of fame) here on the NWMB.

Didn't really have much to say about it, except that it makes me incredibly sad. Devo was my gateway into the rest of new wave music, and even the other band members seemed to realize that Alan was the most talented musician in terms of playing his instrument. (Not that the rest were slouches, particularly Bob1, but you know what I'm saying.) I had always hoped Alan might give the band another shot, though I respect him for sticking with his departure. RIP.

To me, the essence of Punk and New Wave had a lot to do with having an irreverent attitude towards even "taboo" subjects. Nothing was off limits. This is something the bands brought forth in their sound and message. I could get all butt hurt too and lambast DEVO for the politically incorrect ridiculing of "Mongoloids". Oh how insensitive!
As with most all posts here, it's usually best to unclench your sphincter and let it go if you don't like it. No doubt at some point you've found humor and laughed at things you weren't supposed to, you hypocritical Fucks. Somebody bought all those Sam Kinison, Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor albums. You may have even told an off color, sexist or racist joke. In the pantheon of life experiences, it's not worth getting upset about. Unless you decide you must in which case you can Fuck Off.

Me Too .... I enjoy the posts (made by others) even when I might only be remotely interested in the artist, or story about them. All of them more or less collectively represent songs and music from the past that I enjoy.
