I know, it's an 80's board, but when I discuss the relative merits of the different decades' "alt rock," I always point to the dreadful crap that Clear Channel rock stations beat us over the head with in the 90's. I would like to make a list, as I don't see Blender or anyone else having a 90's-specific worst rock song list for the specific type of rock I loathe most.

I'm talking about...
1. Dreadful to listen to, downbeat mournful music.
2. Utterly nonsensical lyrics, involving dirt, holes, freaks...

Here's the "main offenders" I got so far..

1. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
2. Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole
3. Korn - Freak on a Leash
4. Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff
5. Staind - Outside
6. Linkin Park - Numb
7. Local H - Bound for the Floor

I'm not talking about Chumbawamba or Right Said Fred, just the real DREADFUL stuff! I know there's more, so start naming them!

I liked Soundgarden the FIRST time I heard it back when it was called Black Sabbath.

Wow, that's high praise for Right Said Fred.

Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and even Local H don't belong on any worst of anything lists. I managed a music store in the 90's and off the top of my head, here's the worst of the worst so-called "rock" and "alternative" music that was gobbled up by the idiot masses. Such as:

Anything by Creed, Nickelback, Hootie, Lenny Kravitz or Matchbox 20.

The following one hit wonder bands:

4 Non Blondes - What's Up?
Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want
Dog's Eye View -Everything Falls Apart
The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's


Anything by any band that would possibly appeal to white kids with dreads ... shit like Dave Matthews, Phish, Blues Traveler, Geggy Tah, Everything, 311, Rusted Root, etc. (I'll give Sublime a pass here).

NIRVANA, hello?? The garbage that rung in the most terrible genre of music EVER! And a well earned nod to Green Day as well.

Motors has nailed it....and sadly all of these lousy bands turned out to be rock music's last hurrah before giving way to 15 straight years of teen idols.

.. and that in itself is a good point Ghosty - I'd rather have many of these 90's rock bands back in the mainstream today in place of 95% of the bullshit floating about in it today...

I like Nirvana (in fact I regard them as important)and I kinda like Green Day, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Linkin Park - they are all what i'd call real bands who have earnt fame in playing real music. Its getting increasingly rare these days.

Motors' list makes more sense to me.

i love music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and especially 80s. i really like some music from the 30s and 40s. but music from the 90s til now i just cannot stand. and really i dont think most of those 90s one hit wonder bands are worth mentioning because they were just one hit wonders, and some of those songs werent any worse to me than whitney houston was in the 80s. the ones that bug me most are soundgarden and pearl jam, especially soundgarden to me are one of the worst sounding bands of all time. i cannot stand their guitar sound and i cannot stand the michael boltonish over singing. every time i hear him screaming out his lyrics at the top of his lungs i just picture a giant vein on his forhead throbbing for dear life. and dont even get me started on what a tool marilyn manson is.

so this is where all the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync fans have gathered, cool!

on a serious note, it seems any band that managed to come up with a memorable and overplayed commercial tune is going to be criticized here...

personally I'm not a big fan of 90's post-grunge, but I never minded some Collective Soul, Hootie/Blowfish, Vertical Horizon, Matchbox 20 etc.. and later enjoyed some 3 Doors Down and Nickelback too. Also I remember enjoying The Wallflowers, One Headlight takes me right back, remember them, pretty inescapable at the time? Or how about Fastball (The Way), all you haters probably just forgot [:D]

I think Weezer and Green Day from that time had some staying power well into the 2000's

Blind Melon, Stone Temple Pilots, The Spin Doctors, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Smashing Pumpkins.

But i love Radiohead, Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr.
