oh, that's right, you can't.

why? because most groups sounded at their
best in the 80s.

they were at their creative peaks,
and sadly can't be like that anymore.

sure they try to relive their old days,
and some are stuck playing greatest hits
shows at festivals and concerts.

some keep trying to make new music, which
might be ok, or better than other music nowadays.
but most fall flat, and have disbanded. or don't
care about music nowadays.

i'll admit that some groups started out rough.

i prefer midge ure's ultravox era - over john foxx.

genesis sounded better with phil collins than peter gabriel.

duran duran sounded best as the original 5, and although
they've gotten back together, they can't match their original
sound.

depeche mode is much better without vince clarke.

simple minds had a lot of line ups, but their peak
was during 81-84.

thompson twins were best as a trio.

kraftwerk went through several changes, but
sounded best during 75-84.

the cure sounded best during the 80-83 era.

echo and the bunnymen sound great today too,
but they peaked in the early to mid 80s.


i could go on and on, but it's clear that the bands that
created great music did so back then. they don't make them
like they used to.

there's a few decent bands from the 90's. but not many.

I would take issue with that.Speak and spell would be my fav album by DM.

DM with VC would be at least on a par with DM circa 82 -84 after 84 DM regressed in my opinion.

Also forgot to mention TT i much prefer their early material....singles such as "She's in love with mystery","Make Believe" and "Animal Laugh (Oumma Aularesso)" are sublime and every bit as good as "Doctor doctor","You take me up" etc......which were ok and didn't have anything against.

I think you can make this observation about any band or musician, not exclusively New Wave ones. While it's true many bands simply don't "have it" the way they used to, you can't discount the fact that your best memories are from certain times in your life -- you always like best the music you grew up with.

If it was at all possible to completely erase the last 30 years from your brain and be introduced to some of these bands solely with the music they are making now without the benefit of comparison, you may think some of it not too bad.

speak and spell was a decent album.

but there's no way it can compare with construction time again
or some great reward. overall, depeche mode has been much better
off without vince clarke.

and honestly, having yaz, and erasure as a result of that
is better for us.

phil collins brought a better sound to the group.

peter gabriel did the prog rock and art rock sound well.

but i preferred yes, in the late 80's, and even 90210 was
a great sound for them.

yes, later genesis wasn't that great.
but the early phil collins solo albums are classics.

and i think peter gabriel was much better as a solo
act, even though i only like a few of his songs.

not true at all.

i was born in late 60's, and grew up on classic rock.

some of those bands created a lot of great music then,
but peaked in the 80s'.

the only band from the 60s i like is the doors.

i like a few of groups from the 70's, but only
a few of them now. most have disbanded.
yes, there's some disco, and classic rock bands,
but they are not my favorites.


the only group that i like more now that when
they started in the 80's is underworld.
i didn't like freur, and i didn't like the
early 80's version of them. when they did
electronica in the 90's is when they peaked
from 93-96.
