The worst New Wave song ever!

Postby NuWavo80s » Wed Aug 18, 2021 8:43 pm

With all the "Best" lists,
I thought it would interesting
to see what are some of the worst
New Wave songs ever!

My nomination for one of the worst NW songs ever is:

Dog Police - Dog Police 1983

The video is even terrible.

In my honest opinion, this isn't New Wave, this a novelty song, but yes, it is not good.

My nomination?

There are too many Howard Jones songs to choose from...

Jim2, is one those serious New Wavers.
A lot of New Wave songs are Novelty.
"Honest Opinion" bahaha!
Isn't that the epitome of an oxymoron right there!

My vote goes to Killer Pussy "Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage"
or anything by Nina Hagen. (Oh wait she's Novelty)

My vote for worst New Wave song goes to
I'll Tumble 4 Ya by Culture Club.
Some Culture Club & Wham!
didn't stand the test of time,
but I have a soft spot for them.
I do roll up the windows to my car,
when I'm stopped at an intersection playing Wham! or Culture Club.
They are kind of like The Bee Gees of the 80s.

At the time I used to loathe Hazel O'Connor's The Eighth Day'. Seemed to be so obviously ripping off Lene Lovich and Siouxsie . Now I admit to quite liking the song.

I rate Siouxsie and The Banshees' very highly, bought a lot of their music and saw them a live a number of times between 1980-1987 , but their version of 'The Passenger' just seemed silly both then and now.

"Kiss Me" - Stephen Duffy

I've always thought the music was weak, and the lyrics are even weaker. "Kiss me with your mouth". What else could you kiss with?

Wham! were not new wave. The only thing "new wave" about Wham! were their timing.

There's a multitude of new wave songs and bands that I detest. Off the top of my head, a few personal hates are "Tempted" by Squeeze and "True" by Spandau Ballet. Not even sure how "True" counts as a new wave song, to be honest. It's the most grating adult contemporary, limp, mainstream pop song imaginable. I like most of Squeeze's output, but "Tempted" just bugs me to no end.

The original Tin Tin version is better but it still had the same lyrics. I don't mind it.

No way I would count Squeeze's Tempted as a new wave song. It's R 'n' B. Same with Black Coffee In Bed.

Worst new wave song? I don't know. Maybe some of the later Adam Ant stuff like Puss N' Boots and Apollo 9 I never really cared for.

Apollo 9 just might be the very close to his finest single ever. IMHO.

Anything by the band Red Flag. Boy did they suck! The only thing they really had in common with Depeche was their look (as much as they tried to convince otherwise). They were like a grade B Camouflage...who were themselves already a grade C Depeche clone band. At least they later interjected some originality by working with Dan Lacksman and varying the sound a bit.

Two other bands in the Depeche-clone genre that also sucked mightily were Celebrate the Nun and Cause and Effect.

I actually liked Celebrate the Nun. Haha! But I agree that they were a sub-grade Depeche, along with Camouflage.

Oh it's cool...too each his own...guilty pleasures and all that. I was intentionally being provocative just to get people talking. ;-)
I really liked Hipsway, so there ya go!
