if there are any omd fans out there it would be interesting
to hear your views on what i think were one of the most underated bands
of the 80`s.

I agree, they were terribly under rated. After they split and Andy retained the name "OMD" I think paled in comaprison. Paul's subsequent outings with "onetwo" and the "listening pool" showed proomise but lacked the raw power and melody of OMD. I think the "Pacific Age" was their beginning of the end. I didn't care for the added horn section.

Underrated in what way? Certainly not in getting almost mainstream airplay off every album. Perhaps in not being given the synth pioneer cred?

Not in the USA. At least not until the miserable If You Leave. And that was it basically,in the USA (and most elsewheres)

Huh? I guess KROQ folks heard them right from the get-to and all the way throughout. Electricity, Messerschmit Twins, Enola Gay, Joan of Arc, Souvenir, Georgia, Genetic Engineering, Tesla Girls, Locomotion. And then right, If You Leave, Secret, etc and death. I'm sure the same for the UK. It was different elsewhere??

I wonder what the ratings (audience share) of KROQ, WLIR, WBCN and others were in the heyday of new wave. IIRC, WLIR did not have a very big market share when it was good. Not sure about the others. The stations with the biggest listenerships were not playing OMD until IYL (in the USA). Of course in the UK OMD was a top 10 pop group in the early 80s.

here, in the midwest (including the chicagoland area), the only song that ever received any regular airplay was "if you leave". You could hear on a rare occassion something different on an obscure alternatives aring.

I LOVE these guys. I can listen to them over and over again (their old stuff). But 80s Seattle stations (my teen years) did not really play these guys. "Talking Loud and Clear" and "Tesla Girls" was about it, before they got famous. I may have heard "Electricity" or "Messages" back then; I don't remember. I seem to recall KJET 1600 AM playing OMD--and their earlier material--much more frequently than KYYX 96.5 FM. Or KZAM.

Well there you have it then, KROQ was indeed the greatest radio station the world had ever seen. Just like the Star Wars quote they used to drop in...
"This station is now the ultimate power in the universe. I suggest we use it." [^]

The band most overdue for a compilation DVD? When in the heck is this thing going to be released? My favourite songs:
Souvenir
Statues
Almost
Stanlow
Of All The Things We Made
Silent Running
Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans)
All That Glitters

I have been listening to there music for the last 20 odd years and yes
i do agree that the last few albums they released before they split did lack the omd feel to them, but they still had some gems on these albums.it`s good to see that the new wave influence is still obvious in a lot of bands today.omd do plan to release a dvd in the near future but im not sure if it`s going to be available on region 1 though.

Underrated and you're from the UK?? They had LOADS of hits here in England from the start of the 80's well into the 90s and all their albums made the top 30.
My fave songs is the first self-titled album (Dancing is paticular a fave of mine) and their UK best-of is a very good place to start.

when i say underated i mean by the media and record press alike in the 80`s and early 90`s here in the uk.
basicly i don`t think they got the credit they deserved.
