The "New" Cars

Looks like it's going to be Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Todd Rundgren, Prairie Prince (drummer - The Tubes) and Kasim Sulton (bass player - no idea who this guy is).

Seems to be a lot of drama going on behind the scenes over this.

Just wondering how others feel about it. I know it has been mentioned on this board before, so I checked out Todd Rundgren's site. It appears that it is actually going to happen.

I wish the original members of the band would have gotten their shit together and done a reunion tour before Ben Orr passed away.

Kasim Sultan is a Rundgren frontman as well. It should be Utopia featuring Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes. Cartopia

You know, I'd probably go to see them if they played close by here, but I just can't see how it could be that good without Ben Orr & Rik Ocasik.

I'd go see them, but that's 'cause I think of them as a totally different band who also shares the name of popular 70s and 80s New Wave outfit[8D]

Seems a bit sad to me. Do they really need the $$$$? Did they blow all theirs on fancy boats and coke?

I don't see how it can be "The Cars" w/o Ocasek and Orr.

On top of that, as much as I absolutely love the first 3 Cars albums, I really despise everything after Panorama. I hated Shake It Up and everything after that I heard. They seemed to go from having a great spark, fresh catchy tunes and some originality to just another top 40/MTV act.

I have to agree with you on that. I even have a hard time listening to the first Lp in its entirety since so many of the songs are so played out on commercial radio. Love Candy O & Panorama though.

I saw every Cars concert but no way I'd lay down cash for this. It was 17 years ago - I'm older, Ben Orr is dead and Ric has no interest.

It's over, let it go. Leave us with our memories.

I understand what you are saying. I really do.

I just wonder what these guys are supposed to do.

Continue to play with other bands and never play the music they helped create again? Or worse, never play again because they had their 15 minutes of fame?

I would like to believe it isn't just about the $$$. I hope the main reason they are doing it is because of their love of music and bringing it to their fans.

Well if it's about playing the music you go do that and don't call yourself The Cars or a Cars Tribute. Far as I know none of them are legally barred from playing those songs.

But if they went out under any other name there wouldn't be as much interest (money).
If you heard that Paul McCartney were putting together a band tomorrow to tour and was going to call it The Beatles you'd think that was a little crass. Well I think this is along the same lines.

I agree with you on that one.

I don't think they should be calling themselves The Cars or The New Cars.

It seems to be the thing to do these days, and some bands have had success. Look at Queen. There is also INXS. Who knows how successful they will be without Michael Hutchence.

Yeah when I first saw the heading I was interested but after reading the first post I thought it was a joke. I think they would at least need Ocasek involved to lend it some credibility.

As it is I wish them luck.

Considering Orr died I think this is slightly uncomfortable. I wish his former bandmates had said no. Surely they don't need the money?

It's fun to revisit with old bands but if I can't see all the original members then what's the point? Case in point A Flock Of Seagulls.

Maybe in another 20 years when I care even less then I could sit and enjoy this but not now.

I gotta run, there's a Beach Boys concert tonight and they have one of the original guitarists.

They should call it "Jefferson Carship", after another once great band that long overstayed it's welcome with members that had no connection to the original group.

As we know, the inevitable result was schlock and awe.

Yeah, this reminds me of when you see an ad for the stae fair and they have an ad spot for "Steppenwolf, featuring John Kay!!!" which means it's one original member and a bunch of kids or studio musicians.

It's not quite that bad really.

I agree, nobody should have to give up music, but you can carry on to do new things rather than be a lookback. There's something "high school reunionesque" about this. I'd be much more interested to hear these cats come up with something new.

If they've still got it in them to create something, do THAT, y'know?

On the other hand, there is the argument that after a certain age, taking the rock and roll stage is kinda pathetic.

I don't mean to sound bitter. I do wish them the best. I hope it is a fun venture and not just a money grab.I don't know whether that makes me naive or cynical.

Oh if only THAT were true. The only original member left is the most odious and useless one, Mike Love. Calling that army of sidemen he's got onstage "The Beach Boys" is a sick joke.[:(]
