Great Point ElectricLash. Even early Ultravox had some good Guitar songs like "New Europeans"

XXX, Chicks and the Keytar[?][?][?]

Well Lets look what do New Wave chicks play:
Altered Images
Delta 5
The Raincoats
The Slits
The Go Go's
Siouxie and the Banshees
Essential Logic
X Ray Spex

With all this overwhelming evidence it looks like new wave chicks dig the guitar.

It may be safe to say that new wave is not techno-electro-euro-pop[;)]

If you haven't already (which I'm sure you have), you should check out Numan's early stuff with Tubeway Army. It was a rough mix of punk & glam, rarely a keyboard to be found.

Why choose? Just listen to it all!

Depending on my mood I like synths, or I like guitars, or I like harmonica and accordian, ar a balilika, or Tibetan throat singing.

To More guitar bands to add

Romeo Void
Pearl Harbour and the Explosions

[?]: If synths were the shit, then why are thier threads of "Best Guitar Solo" and "Best Bass Line"?

I see no "best synth sound or what ever" out there.

Why guitar new wave was so popular back in the day late 70s early 80s is because people were so sick of the 30 minute keybord solo from the likes of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

In fact the Saxaphone should get more love than the synth[:)]

ELP are awesome, so are Yes, but, more on our level, Kraftwerk would be reduced to almost nothing without synths. So would Neu!, Cabaret Voltaire, Ultravox and Visage, Japan, OMD, NewOrder, Depeche Mode, The Human League, Duran Duran, Yaz(oo) and Erasure, and pretty much half of the 80s' trademark sound. Heck, even the noisiest of bands had a synth as an integrant (Suicide?).

Romeo Void? I'd say they're on par with Trans-X as a one or two-hit wonder even among fans like us. Saxophone? And the first band that comes to mind is Romeo Void? No Haircut 100? No Roxy Music? No English Beat? Romeo Void?? Actually, Glen Frey's songs had a world-famous saxophone sound that could probably bury most of these bands in recognition alone.

How dare you mention Japan!!! The synth was a distent second or third to Mick Karn's Bass and Rob Deen's Guitar leads.

Saxaphone!!! the first thing that should come to your mind is X-Ray Spex[;)]

You have most likely heard the Moroder-produced stuff by Japan. You know? The music that was transitional between their two Glam Rock albums, Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives, and 1979's quintessential New Romantic album, Quiet Life? That was the centre stage for synths. Actually, Quiet Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids themselves are comprised of waves upon waves of synth patches. If anything, it would be piano that was most noticeable for me in "Nightporter" (both album and live version). Check out the reviews these albums got and what words they used to describe the music:

I'm telling you, if you ignore the importance of synths, their music would be reduced back to Adolescent Sex, an album which David Sylvian himself despises.

XXX,

I'll give you Gentalmen and Tin Drum.

Quiet life was a mix, I've been listening to that LP for almost 25 years and with out Mick Karn Japan would not be Japan

And stop picking on Adolecent Sex, I love that Album it is sooo swanky

cheers,
jr

Dude, I thought I was the hardcore Japan fan here. When I said "reduce" I didn't mean it to come off like I don't like their album. They're all equally-good albums from first to last song, with the exception of Gentlemen (which is the best album from the 80s[8D] ). Also, can't deny the fact that if one were remove anything from the composite, the whole outfit would fall apart. I just think synths don't get enough respeck as it is from mainstream music fans and then read the same thing at a New Wave board[:0]

I'm pretty hardcore, but I've never been able to stomach "Adolescent Sex"

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the first really great Synthpop record, John Foxx's "Metamatic" and its precursor, Ultravox's "Systems of Romance". Ultravox's first three records were a great balance of both guitar and synth. I gues that because my tastes evolved from prog Rock in the '70's, I had a synth bias in my tastes. My later interests in Americana and Honky Tonk led me toward guitars. But as I peruse my collection of music, I guess synths dominate.
