I've got a few 20-something co-workers who are very much into music yet don't know much about the '80s at all (apart from THE HITS). I've started a new series for them called EDUC80S, which covers certain genres per disc. I've already made them one that has punk and power pop on it, I'm working on a 'synthpop' one and then there's one that I need your help on.

I'm going to call it Quirky, since the music does NOT fall into any new wave catagory very easily.

A few bands/songs I'm planning to feature include:

Trio-Da Da Da
Wide Boy Awake-Chicken Outlaw
Hayzi Fantazee (sp?)-Shiny Shiny
The Chefs-Sweetie
XTC-Making Plans For Nigel

and many more....

although these bands are different from each other, I'm trying to think of another 'term' that may fit better than Quirky. What would YOU call these types of bands? In the case of XTC, some of their stuff is easily classifiable, but you can't say that Nigel or Helicopter would fall under the same umbrella as Generals And Majors...

quirky, hm ... no

Haysi Fantayzee -
I Lost My Dodi
John Wayne Is Big Leggy
- I would define those songs quirky

You don't want to scare these guys off, and have them think the eighties was a decade full of goofy material, don't get me wrong but the more quirky/strange bands and songs should come later on, introduce them to stuff like -

Have a disc dedicated to 'new romantic' another disc dedicated to 'power pop' etc. This way the guys get a taste of what genre they might like the most and explore deeper into it.

For example,
try putting these songs on the new romantic themed CD
Soft Cell - Bedsitter, Secret Life, What
Visage - Fade To Grey, Mind Of A Toy, Pleasure Boys
Japan - Still Life In Mobile Homes, Visions Of China

This is just my idea of what might be most tasteful, another idea would be NO-ONE Hit wonder,
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno
Toni Basil - Shoppin' From A To Z

etc.

Never heard of them before, so thanks for the introduction

I prefer Wide Boy Awake's - "Come Back Friday" over "Chicken Outlaw"

A few I'd include:
Blanket of Secrecy - Say You Will
The Church - Metropolis
The Church - The Unguarded Moment
The Church - Under the Milky Way
Fischer-Z - So Long
Frazier Chorus - Dream Kitchen
The Indian Givers - Hatcheck Girl
The Indian Givers - Unthinking You
Industry - State of the Nation
Our Daughter's Wedding - Lawnchairs
Peter Godwin - Images of Heaven
Visage - Fade to Grey

Edit - Sorry I just re-read your post and it's about quirky songs, of which I would not include any of the above list, beyond Wide Boy Awake's - "Come Back Friday" and maybe Our Daughter's Wedding - Lawnchairs

Another great series is the 6-piece Richade Blade's Flashback Favorites. It's got a lot of 12" singles that still aren't available elsewhere on CD.

Richard Blade was a leading DJ on Southern California's KROQ (when it was the ROQ of the 80s).

He's now a DJ on SIRIUS 22 First Wave (Classic Alternative) and plays some 12" rares quite often.
