Most Adventurous NW Bands

Postby guyinsf » Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:47 am

Which bands will go down as the most adventurous, experimental and musically diversed in NW history in your opinion? I'm talking about bands known for "firsts", weren't afraid to create a sound different than what they were known for, did something against what was trendy, took risks and were unapologetic for all their actions. I'm not thinking of bands that were just simply known for good music. Try to state why you think they belong in this category, not just name the bands.

Well, I think when the B52s first started out, they were truly adventurous....their sound was bizarre, their looks (costumes--especially the gals--beehive wigs? ) were out-of-this-world, and their whole image screamed KITSCH. It seemed as if they didn't care what anyone thought; they were just gonna party up a storm with their music, and encourage everyone to do the same. Those lucky enough to catch a B52s show, esp. in their early days, can attest to their incredible wackiness and nose-thumbing at convention. They sincerely marched to the beat of their own drummer....for a few albums, anyway!

I say Talking Heads... they took risks and varied along their albums. [:D]

I thought The B-52's and Devo were pretty "out there" but lots of fun, as well as Gary Numan (who I hated at the time, but love now).

Thank god for musicians like them, cause I remember the radio playing songs like Debbie Boone's "You Light up my Life" and Streisand's "Evergreen" and thinking who is buying this crap?

Pop Group

I think they went a bit in pushing the envelope though as "Y" was first album that took me two sitting to listen to.

Oingo Boingo - Never went for any proven formula and were always changing the sound of the band.

I always thought the Suburbs had a broad mix of New Wave-Punk with Funk and even Jazz all thrown in and played way too fast. Actually, that description works for Fishbone too, and it's the first time I ever thought of those two bands in the same vein!

Terry Hall and his first band The Specials came up with the ska-revival in the early 80's.He then had quite some adventures by forming and disbanding new bands during the 80's, including The Fun Boy Three, The Colourfield and Vegas.
