Ministry - Revenge

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

I saw Ministry at Irving Plaza in NYC shortly after "Twitch" came out. The ads for the show on WLIR-FM featured all their dance hits from "With Sympathy," but they had obviously already turned the page. Some guy yells out "Work for Love," and Al replies "You want to hear 'Work for love?'...F-off and buy the record!" Pretty disappointing for the girls we brought, as "All Day" and "Halloween" were the only things they knew after expecting "Revenge" "Effigy" and "Here We Go."

It'll never get rereleased b/c Al absolutely hates the With Sympathy record. He claims he had no control over the production of it. I think he even claimed he didn't even sing on it in one interview and that was actually somebody else. However, there's live footage of him singing some of those songs and he sounded just like on the record. There are also people who knew him during the time that said he absolutely loved synth pop music back then and he just doesn't want to admit it now.

But does he own the rights for the album?

Yeah, I have no connection to him, but I think he's full of shit too.

Yeah, but I think we can all agree that he's full of shit (and/or full of drugs), so his statement isn't telling us much.

Well, judging even by Ministry's new stuff, I can still hear a hint of Al's british accent.

That's the thing I've always wondered: he's disowned With Sympathy, but the stuff he put out on Wax Trax around that time fit very well with it (and even Over The Shoulder, out on Sire after the Arista deal ended, still sounded kinda like the Ministry we knew.) Nobody was putting a gun against his head for any of that stuff, right?

Me, I like that era. What can I say?

Even the cover art for the "With Sympathy" is awesome. I guess the question again is who does own the rights to this album. If it's the label, we have a slim shot. If it's Al, probably no shot. By the way, does anyone know the story about the name change of the song "Do The Etawa"? I may have asked this a long time ago and I'm sorry if I did but I'm getting old and forgetful. [:)]

Early ministry was his best stuff in my eyes.Ok, so they wanted him to sound like some of the overseas bands, great, that was the in thing back then. Why he turned so sour on all the early stuff, his best stuff is crazy..I couldn't stomach his heavy music, but i know it was very popular, so, to each their own. Many musicians change up their music in their life cycle but never really badmouth and slam the best work...

It seems like most of us on here love the early Ministry and can't stand the later Ministry. So who listens to this stuff? Non of my Metal fans that tell me they like Ministry. My Industrial friends have pretty much all ditched Ministry too.

Did anyone ever find a full version of "I'm Falling"?

I have a few friends who are into Metal but they mainly enjoy 80's Metal and don't know anything past 1985 (I enjoy Metal myself up till around that era) and they don't know Ministry either. The kids at the University where I work, on the other hand, are into Ministry in the same way they're into Metallica, as an old band that they've been taught to respect by their older siblings. They have no idea about anything before Psalm 69 so they're oblivious to Ministry's early years. Perhaps Ministry is thought of as a heritage act that isn't actively listened to but it adds to your Metal cred to have a few Ministry CD's in your collection. Who knows? Al's making $$$ from somebody somewhere, I guess.

Certainly, enough to continue releasing more material? they just released a new cd again, under the "Ministry" moniker.

I stayed with Ministry thru Psalm 69. According to AMG Psalm 69 was in the top 30 and went platinum.
